The minutes of the previous meeting were approved.
Beverley Miller introduced Gloria Santiago, the new Staff Coordinator for the
Commission. Beverley will be moving back to Minnesota at the end of May.
Gloria Santiago spoke briefly about her background.
Nelda Crowell made a motion to command Beverley Miller for her great help to
the Glendale Arts Commission and her input in the development of the Commission.
The motion passed unanimously.
Hugh Harelson from the Arizona Highways Magazine has been invited to the June 18,
1985 unveiling of Richard Szwarocky's "The Immigrants." Mr. Harelson has not
responded yet. The June 18th unveiling will be from 4:00 p.m. ® 5:30 p.m. Only
punch will be served since there will be refreshments in Murphy Park. A flower
arrangement will be purchased for the table. Enid will make arrangements for
the name tags. The program will include the Mayor, Mr. Harelson, Richard and
Marie.
Discussion was held on having biography handout information on Richard and
information on Robert McCall. It was suggested that three individual half
sheets with the artists information be printed. There was also discussion if the
individual handouts should include a brief statement on the Glendale Arts
Commission. The wording on the Commission statement was discussed as to what
should be included. The suggested statement is:
Title
Artist
Purchase by the Glendale Arts Commission Date
The Glendale Arts Commission is composed of volunteers who select public art
for the City of Glendale. The Glendale Arts Commission is responsible for
acquiring works of art through the Municipal Art Fund as established by the
City of Glendale ordinance. The Commission, formed in 1983, was the first
Art Commission in the State of Arizona.

A motion was made by Nelda Crowell to ask both Artists to submit fact sheets on
themselves. Lowell Rogers seconded the motion. The Commission agreed to print-
ing the fact sheets.
Marie Sands met with Beverley Miller, Rodean Widom and Gloria Santiago to discuss
the Debbie Gessner sculpture and its location at the new library at Sahuaro Ranch.
The Commission is recommending the sculpture be placed in a pool of water-. Rodean
Widom, City Librarian, is researching the costs of similar sculptures in ponds
with the Cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale.
A rough draft of the contract for Debbie Gessner was reviewed by the members.
Various members felt that Debbie's cost of the sculpture should be clearer even
though the cost of the foundry is not known. The "Right of Reproduction" should
also be included.
A motion was made by Betty Wade to authorize the Commission to purchase a juried
work of art at the 1985 Festival of the Arts. The price is not to exceed $3,000.
The motion passed unanimously.
NEW BUSINESS
Marie brought up that the Library was getting requests from artists requesting
exhibition space. She suggested that the Commission may want to become a clearing
house for art exhibitions in public places. Discussion was held on this idea and
will be discussed at a later date.
Lowell Rogers suggested the video tape of Richard be shown during the June 18th
unveiling on the second floor. Everyone felt this was a great idea.
There being no other business the meeting was adjourned at 4:10 p.m.
