A. Placement of Art - Mrs. Crowell recommended the
Arts Commission establish direction on where the
works of arts are to be placed. The present
A rdinance was reviewed, the placement of art is
cA vered in the ordinance. The Commission's
concerns should be, first it is placed in a
location where it gets maximum public exposure and
a location where the art work gets maximum
security. A motion was made by Mrs. Crowell to
establish a resolution reinforcing the placement of
art. The motion was seconded by Mr. Page. See the
attached resolution.
B. Future Gallery Shows - The Glendale Arts
Council has requested the use of the City Council
Gallery for their Annual Festival of the Arts
-53-
Juried Show in the Fall. The dates of the Festival
are: October 8, 9, 10 -Hang Show; October
11 -Reception; October 12-25 Show Open; and October
18 & 19, Festival. The Arts Council. and the
Recreation Department are co -sponsoring the Youth
Festival and the Arts Festival on October 18 & 19.
The Murphy Park Renovation Dedication will probably
be held during the weekend. The Arts Commission
felt this would be a good time to dedicate "Old
Friends."
The Mayor has requested the Arts Commission help
the Festival of the Arts in some form. Mrs. Sands
suggested the Commission sponsor an art competition
requesting drawings or photographs of the Sugar
Beet Factory. the winner of the Juried Competition
would be displayed at the Festival.. A concern
expressed by the members is that there may riot be a
sufficient number of quality art work submitted.
Mr. Page made a motion to inform the Glendale Arts
Council that the Arts Commission will be interested
in purchasing art work of Glendale related subject
matter particularly historical. sites. The
Commission's purchase award will not exceed $3,000.
The Arts Council will inform their artists. The
motion was seconded by Mrs. Crowell. It passed
unanimously.
C. Austin Gallery will be present at the May
Meeting.
Tom Shadoin, the interior designer for the new
Library, and Rodeane Widom discussed the interior
of the new Library. A location for a stained glass
window could not be found. Several other possible
art locations were discussed. One possible site is
the exterior west wall coming from the parking
lot. The exterior wall is very plain, but is the
first view of the Library. The wall is
approximately 80 ft. long and 15 ft. high. Since
it is an outside wall, the medium would need to be
considered, especially since it is a west wall with
maximum exposure to the sun. One suggestion was a
bar relief. Ms. Widom will review if there are
electrical stubs on that wall for lighting the
possible art work. "Carousel Departure," by
Richard Hillis (5111 x 65") was suggested for a wall
in the Youth Services area. Ms. Widom offered to
keep the Arts Commission informed on the interior
decorating of the Library. There is also an area
for possible temporary exhibits.

Mrs. Sands reported that she and Gloria had been
contacted by a gallery in Scottsdale to display
their pieces in the gallery. The gallery is one
that specializes in reproductions. Mrs. Sands
denied the request because it would be a commercial
organization and the City Council Gallery was not
designed for those purposes. A motion was made by
Mrs. Crowell that the Gallery would not be open to
commercial. organization or for commercial use. The
motion was seconded by Mrs. Abel. The motion
passed unanimously.
The present ordinance is currently being revised to
include the staggered terms and the City Council
Gallery responsibility.
