HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 4/10/1985MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONF- ERENCE ROOM, 5850 W. GLENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10, 1985 AT 3:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Enid Abel, Betty Wade, Dr. Joseph Atkins and Robert Page. Nelda Crowell came later, Lowell Rogers was absent. Also present were: Beverley Miller, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission, Helen Cornell, Public Information Officer, Gloria Santiago, Recreation Supervisor, Rodean Widom, Library and Cable Director, Thomas M. Shadoin Jr., President of Shadoin-Micou Associates, J. Barry Moffit, Library Architect, Diana Darling, Interiors.Designer, Larry Anderson, Airport Architect and Debbie Gessner, Artist. DISCUSSION Marie asked for comments concerning the minutes of the previous meeting; there being none, the minutes stand approved as sent. Larry Anderson went over the modifications made to the original drawings for the design of the new airport. Included in the changes is a sculpture garden, which will be approximately 15-20' wide by 6' in length. Also, due to the design changes, the location of the Mc Call painting was moved to the lobby area. This wall is approximately 20' long x 10' high. The airport is scheduled for completion in June, 1986. Motion by Dr. Atkins, seconded by Enid Abel, to purchase a second painting of "Arizona's Promise" by Robert Mc Call for $5,000. Motion passed unanimously. This painting is approximately 24" x 30" and the cost includes the frame. The copyright has been retained by Mc Call. Debbie Gessner presented a wax model of her sculpture entitled, "Sanjeros". There will be 3 figures, approximately 4' high, and will cost from $34,000 - 41,000. It would be a bronze sculpture, possibly located in a pool of water. The sculpture would be located at the new library. Barry Moffit spoke briefly about how you confront this piece of art, and the need for the artist and the architect to get together to express ideas concerning the location etc. for this work of art. Motion by Dr. Atkins, seconded by Robert Page, to have Debbie Gessner proceed with her work; and to have Debbie and Barry work together to intergrate the artwork with the architecture. Motion passed unanimously. The library construction is scheduled for completion in the Spring of 1987. Tom Shadoin is responsible for the interior of the library, and he asked the commission to begin thinking of what types of artwork they would be purchasing and where they would envision it. The May meeting will be on the 8th, the June meeting will be on the 12th. Richard's unveiling will be June 18th from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. and will be open to the public. Invitations will be sent. We will serve punch only. Robert Farr, Video Production Specialist, presented a 3 minute video tape of Richard Szwarocky working on "The Immigrants". The commission was very excited about Richard's work and was also very happy with the work Rob had done in putting this production together.
