GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY
OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE
COMPLEX, BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM
5850 WEST GLENDALE AVENUE ON
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19. 1986, AT 3:00 P.M.

The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman
Mrs.Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following
members present: Lowell Rodgers, Nelda Crowell,
Enid Abel, and Dr. Joe Atkins. Also present was Ed
Mell, Artist; George Lundeen, artist; William
Dickerson, from O'Briens Emporium; Mark Kmieciak,
Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission Chairman,
Bart Turner, Parks and Recreation Advisory
Commission Member; Jeff Sherman, B.R.W.
Representative; and Gloria Santiago, Staff
Coordinator for the Arts Commission.

The minutes were corrected as discussed in the
meeting.

Balance as of March 19, 1.986 is $89,810.30.
Discussion
A. Placement of Art -The placement of art works was
discussed by Mrs. Crowell. The Commission's
purpose is to purchase art for "public" places.
Mrs. Sands stated that the Festival of the Arts
purchases in the past have not been specified where
they should be displayed. Mr. Rodgers made a
motion to postpone this issue until the April
meeting. The motion was seconded by Dr. Atkins and
carried unanimously.
B. Ed Mell-Ed Mell, artist for the airport
painting was introduced. Mr. Mell stated he felt a
painting of the White Tank Mountains would be more
"kin" to the Glendale area. He will present
comprehensive pastel sketches at the May 21 Arts
Commission Meeting. Mrs. Sands stated that Hugh
Harelson from Arizona Highways recommended him.

C. George Lundeen -George Lundeen, "Old Friends"
artist, was introduced. "Old Friends" is a limited
edition of 21 not 25 as stated in the previous
minutes. Glendales sculpture has not been cast.
It will. be ready by September. The Arts Commission
requested a Fall Calendar of Events from the
Recreation Department to set an installation date.
Gloria will provide the calendar. The Commission
is considering a date in October. "Old Friends" is
life size, the pedestal can be placed flush with
the ground. The sculpture will be mounted with
1/2" bolts welded to the bottom of the base. Jeff
Sherman, from B.R.W., said the park would be
completed before Labor Day. Jeff also stated he
could provide the pad for concrete for the
sculpture.
D. Municipal Arts Plans IV & V --The City Council
discussed and approved Art Plans IV and V at their
March 4 Workshop. The plans will. be formally
approved at the March 25 Council Meeting.
E. National Endowment for the Arts -Gloria attended
a lecture by Richard Andrews, from the National
Endowment for the Arts on "public art." The
lecture covets progress the Seattle Arts Commission
had made over the last 15 years.

Wednesday, April 16 at 3:00 p.m. The meeting
location will be in the City Council Chambers, the
same level that the Recreation Department is on.
