HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 3/15/1989Minutes of a Regular Meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission Held at the Glendale Municipal Office Complex Wednesday, March 15, 1989, 3:00 P.M. Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Mrs. Marie Sands, at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Enid Abel, Dr. Joe Atkins, Lowell Rogers, Nelda Crowell, and Mavis Voris. Also present was Francis Beaugureau, artist, Police Chief Rose, Asst. Police Chief Forry, Police Capt. McCown, Fire Chief Levenda, and Doug Sexton, from Varney, Sexton, Lunsford, Avy Archietects and Gloria Santiago, Staff Liaison to the Glendale Arts Commission. Approval of Minutes The February 15, 1989, Minutes were approved. Treasurers Report The balance as of March 15 is: $49,317.87 Discussion Doug Sexton presented quotes from artists to construct the Sundial for the Foothills Public Safety Building. The quotes are: $19,500 for a natural clay and terra cota tiles from Cassidy Studio; $27,000 to $38,500 for steel or copper from artist Gary Slater; and the final proposal from Southwest Metals range from $97,720 to $122,000 for corten steel or copper. The City would need to provide the concrete base. If the Cassidy Studios are selected Mr. Sexton's fee would be 10% above the cost and if Mr. Slater is selected Mr. Sexton's fee would be less than %10. At this time metal is preferred by the Commission so Mr. Sexton will continue to work with Mr. Slater. Mr. Beaugureau presented his final sketch for the painting for the City Council Chambers. The un -framed art piece will be approximately 96" in length and 54" in height. A motion was made by Mrs. Abel and seconded by Mrs. Voris to proceed with the commission of Mr. Beaugureau. The cost of the painting will be $20,000 including the frame. The Commission will now proceed to the City Council. Mrs. Sands reported on a seminar on "Art in Transit". The focus of the seminar was public art for the Valtran. Artists and architects were presented. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, April 19, 1989, at 3:00 p.m. in B-3 in the Municipal Office Complex. Iz- A I, Gloria Santiago, Liaison
