HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 3/14/1984MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE SENIOR CENTER, 7121 N. 57TH AVENUE, OCOTILLO BUILDING, ROOM 1, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 14, 1984 AT 3:00 P.M. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Enid Abel, Dr. Joseph Atkins, Nelda Crowell, Robert Page, Betty Wade and Lowell Rogers. Also present was Beverley Miller, Staff Coordinator the the Glendale Arts Commission. DISCUSSION Motion by Betty Wade, seconded by Enid Abel, to approve the minutes of the previous meeting of February 15, 1984. Motion passed unanimously. Marie Sands began by asking all of the commissioners who were present at the last meeting of February 15, 1984, to give their impressions of the artists and their work as presented. Discussion then occurred depicting the various and wide range of works of art that were presented. It was brought out that if the commission should again invite artists to make presentations, they should develop a list of questions ahead of time to be asked of all the artists. It was also thought that the commission should have decided upon a particular type of medium, such as sculpture; and then review all of these and so on. For the next order of discussion, Marie Sands discussed her trip to Sedona. On her trip, she spoke with artists, Joe Bealer, Phillip Vickers and Bill Nebaker. She gave her impressions and offered some insight on the particular works of art these artists were producing, the size and possible cost. Marie Sands then asked Nelda Crowell and Dr. Joseph Atkins to go and visit Phil Curtis. Discussion then turned to well known vs. unknown artists. The question was raised concerning how important is it that we consider an artists background. It seemed to be the consensus of the commission that a good track record is very important; particularily if the art work is commissioned. With a well known artist, we would always have a good investment. Discussion then turned to other possible artists that the commission should get to know. Dr. Joseph Atkins passed around an article on an artist who works with reliefs in wood. Dr. Atkins and Nelda Crowell would visit with the artist; Richard Szwarocky and report back at the next meeting. However, before we spend too much time reviewing too many artists, we need to officially decide on what type or medium we are looking for and where we are going to place it. The commission had previously voted to focus their attention on the municipal office complex. Motion by Robert Page, seconded by Lowell Rogers, to place a priority to acquire a piece of art for the north facing wall in the main lobby of the new municipal office building. Motion passed unanimously. It was decided that Beverley Miller should call the architect and obtain the square footage, what materials, color etc. have been selected. Marie asked that the commissioners please study reliefs for our next meeting. Also, at our next meeting, we will be discussing a theme and medium. Our next meeting will be April 25, 1984 at 3:00 p.m. Motion by Betty Wade, seconded by Enid Abel to adjourn the meeting at 4:20 p.m. Motion passed unanimously.'
