HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 2/19/1986MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONFERENCE ROOM 5850 W. GL ENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 1986 AT 3:00 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Lowell Rodgers, Enid Abel., Betty Wade, Nelda Crowell, Dr. Joe Atkins, Bob Page. Also present was William Dickerson from O'Brien's Emporium and Gloria Santiago, Staff Coordinator for the Glendale Arts Commission. The minutes were approved as read. Balance as of February 19, 1986 is $89,810.3* The cost of the fine art poster was $1,746.60 Future Expenditures are: 2 remaining pymts.-"The Irrigators" $21,000.00 Reflecting pond for "The Irrigators" 18,000.00 Utility lines for pond 7-&Q1,-00 $46,000.00 Projected income for fiscal year 1985-86 $132,000.00 Received in October, 1985 27,391.00 Balance to be received is: $104,609.00 This balance is projected on contraction projects to be completed. An additional transfer is expected in March. 50 Marie discussed the details of a letter received from William Dickerson from O'Brien's Emporium, concerning the George Lundeen "Old Friends". Mr. Dickerson, who was present at the Commission meeting, reinstated the details of the letter. They are, a $10,000. downpayment is needed, a 100 discount will be given off the original. price, and the downpayment will guarantee that price. Mr. Dickerson was made aware that the City Council must approve the purchase and the council will riot meet until. March 4. Mr. Dickerson said he could hold the price of the sculpture until that time. "Old Friends" has 25 in the edition, ten of the twenty-five have been sold to date. "Old Friends" is $36,000.00 10% discount 3,600.00 $32,400.00 Sales tax 6.5% Total price 34,506.00 Down payment of $1.0,800.00 and $23,706.00 will be due on delivery. "Old Friends" is 8' high and weights approximately 700 pounds. The sculpture is multi -finished bronze that weathers well. The commission could request the bronze be treated with a retardant and the colors will stay as it looks in the photography or the bronze could be left natural which would turn to a green patina. George Lundeen lives in Loveland, Colorado, he is originally from Nebraska. Currently Mr. Lundeen is working on portrait commissions of the senators. Mr. Dickerson felt George Lundeen would be very interested in coming to Glendale for the unveiling of the sculpture. A motion was made to purchase George W. Lundeen's "Old Friends" under the conditions of receiving a 10% discount and the prices discussed. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously. The municipal art plan for the George Lundeen sculpture will be brought before the City Council, on March 4. Bob Page reported on Ed Mell. Mr. Mell is interested in a painting for the airport. The suggested theme is the Estrella's at Sunset. His fees are: for a 51 x 101 the price is $14,000, for a 5 1/21 x 12 1/21 the price is $16,000, and for two 51 x 8' the price is $22,000. A motion was made by Nelda to commission an Ed Mell painting. M• The size dimensions for the painting are to be 5 1/21 x 12 1/21 and the price is not to exceed $17,000. The motion was seconded by Bob and it passed unanimously. The library groundbreaking will be on April, 7 (the confirmed date). The Commission would like a sign stating the future site of the "Irrigators" be placed on the site. Debbie Gessner will. not be asked to come down from Prescott. Greg Marek, from Community Development, reviewed the final plans for Murphy Park. The work is projected to be completed in September. The Commission discussed with Greg the Lundeen sculpture and placing it at Murphy Park. Greg and consultants will provide some suggested locations for the placement of the sculpture. The locations will be reviewed with the Parks and Recreation Board. On March 19 representatives from the Parks and Recreation Board; Greg the Murphy Park consultant; and members of the Arts Commission will meet to discuss the locations. The fine arts poster was distributed and publicity on the poster will begin. The next meeting will be Wednesday, March 19 at M, Gloria Santiago Staff Coordinator for Glendale Arts Commission -50-
