HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 2/17/1988MINUTES OF A REGULAR MEETING OF THE GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE HELD AT THE GLENDALE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX 5850 WEST GLENDALE AVENUE WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, AT 3:00 P.M. / y`` Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Mrs. Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Lowell Rogers, Betty Wade, Dr. Atkins, Enid Able and Nelda Crowell. Also present at the meeting were Ron Caya, Director of Arts Education for the Peoria School District; Darla Williams from Varney, Sexton, Lunsford Architects; Mirra Meyers, Arizona Commission on the Arts; Bill Hughes, Assistant Fire Chief; and Gloria Santiago, Staff Liaison to the Glendale Arts Commission. Treasurer's Report A treasurer's report was distributed. Available balance to date is $ 7,589.44 Proposed transfers to the Art Fund 13,833.03 Total Discussion $21,422.47 A. The airport manager has included in the airport newsletter, that propellors are being sought for art work which would be for the airport. B. Mirra Meyers, from the Arizona Commission on the Arts, gave a slide presentation on public art on a National level. Ms. Meyers stated the State Commission Office has an extensive slide bank and invited the Glendale Commission to view them. C. The Arizona Commission on the Arts is sponsoring a "Going Public Art Forum" on March 24. Chairman Mrs. Sands and Gloria Santiago will be attending. The Commissioners were also invited to attend. D. Assistant Fire Chief Bill Hughes gave a presentation on the Foothills Public Safety Building. The area directly East of the building has been designed as a water detention center. It will be landscaped with material and vegetation that will not wash away. Elevation drawings of the building were shown. The building is approximately 24 ft. in height, with a stucco concrete finish. The area above the doors where the fire engineers are parked, was discussed as a possible location for art. This area is 54 ft. in length and 8 ft. in height. A weather vane on top of the building was also discussed. The Commission will continue to research art and possible art locations. E. The Marketing Department and the Arts Commission has split the expense of professional photographs of the art works. These photographs could possible be used for post cards. New Business Ron Caya, Arts Education Director for Peoria School District, presented an idea to the Arts Commission. The proposal was a joint public art project between the Glendale Arts Commission and the Peoria School District. The art would be located on Ironwood High School and would involve the students and art teachers. The approximate cost of the art work could range from $7,000 to $10,000, this cost of the project could be shared between the Commission and the School District. The City of Glendale Attorney has reviewed the Arts Ordinance to verify if the school would be considered a "public location." The Arts Ordinance would need to be amended to allow the City to place art at other public locations. (see attached memo) The Commission decided that further research was needed.
