A. The airport manager has included in the airport
newsletter, that propellors are being sought for art work
which would be for the airport.
B. Mirra Meyers, from the Arizona Commission on the Arts,
gave a slide presentation on public art on a National
level. Ms. Meyers stated the State Commission Office has
an extensive slide bank and invited the Glendale
Commission to view them.
C. The Arizona Commission on the Arts is sponsoring a "Going
Public Art Forum" on March 24. Chairman Mrs. Sands and
Gloria Santiago will be attending. The Commissioners
were also invited to attend.
D. Assistant Fire Chief Bill Hughes gave a presentation on
the Foothills Public Safety Building. The area directly
East of the building has been designed as a water
detention center. It will be landscaped with material
and vegetation that will not wash away.
Elevation drawings of the building were shown. The
building is approximately 24 ft. in height, with a stucco
concrete finish. The area above the doors where the fire
engineers are parked, was discussed as a possible
location for art. This area is 54 ft. in length and 8
ft. in height. A weather vane on top of the building was
also discussed. The Commission will continue to research
art and possible art locations.
E. The Marketing Department and the Arts Commission has
split the expense of professional photographs of the art
works. These photographs could possible be used for post
cards.
New Business
Ron Caya, Arts Education Director for Peoria School District,
presented an idea to the Arts Commission. The proposal was a
joint public art project between the Glendale Arts Commission
and the Peoria School District. The art would be located on
Ironwood High School and would involve the students and art
teachers. The approximate cost of the art work could range
from $7,000 to $10,000, this cost of the project could be
shared between the Commission and the School District.
The City of Glendale Attorney has reviewed the Arts Ordinance
to verify if the school would be considered a "public
location." The Arts Ordinance would need to be amended to
allow the City to place art at other public locations. (see
attached memo)
The Commission decided that further research was needed.
Next Meeting Date
