Glendale Arts Commission
Held at the Glendale Municipal office Complex
Wednesday, February 15, 1989, 3:00 P.M.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Mrs. Marie
Sands, at 3:00 p.m. with the following members present: Enid
Abel, Bob Page, Nelda Crowell, Dr. Joe Atkins, Lowell Rogers,
and Mavis Voris. Also present was Doug Sexton, from Varney,
Sexton, Lunsford, Avy Architects and Gloria Santiago, Staff
Liaison to the Glendale Arts Conmission.
Approval of Minutes
There were two corrections to the January 18 minutes. The
first correction was the improper use of the word
"reflective" in describing the pond at the Municipal
Library. The correct word is "reflection" The second
correction was the date of the next commission meeting, the
correct date is the 111511 not the 16 as stated in the minutes.
Treasurers Report
The balance as of February 15 is: $49,31.7.87
Discussion
Mrs. Mavis Voris was introduced as the newest member to the
Arts Commission. Mrs. Voris has a extensive background in
art and has been a docent for the Tucson Art Museum. Her
knowledge and experience will be an asset to the Commission.
Doug Sexton, Architect, presented a -nodal for a sundial for
the Foothills Public Safety Building. The sundial is
approximately 10 feet in height and 18 to 20 feet in width.
It is designed to cast a shadow on itself and to cast a
shadow on the ground to indicate time of day. Evening
lighting is recommended. The finish has not been
determined. Mr. Sexton will present different types of
finishes and cost of construction at the March meeting.
A :motion was made by Mrs. Crowell and seconded by Mrs. Abel
to approve the 10 foot design. The motion passed.
Francis Beaugureau is working on sketches for a painting for
the Council Chambers. Mr. Beaugureau will present his
sketches at the March meeting.
Bob Page has researched the Arizona Rangers for a sculpture
for the Headquarters Public Safety Building. The Rangers
were active. from 1901 to 1909. Mr. Page will contact three
or four western artists to see if they are interested in
submitting model sketches for a bronze sculpture. The ar4:",-,tS
will be asked to submit sketches including the cost of
installation and delivery. If other artists are interested
they will be welcomed to submit sketches. Mr. Page will
report at the March meeting.
The 1989-90 non -art budget was presented to the Commission by
Gloria Santiago. The proposed budget is:
Staff for Gallery Exhibits $2,020
Art Maintenance $4,500
Art Installation, Printing, Framing $1,600
National Assembly of Art Agencies Membership $ 50
Southwest Arts Conference Registration $ 180
Total $8,350
Southwest Conservation Center will not be able to repair the
"Glendale Pioneers, 191011 until April. He is very busy at
this time. Glen Compton and Gloria Santiago will be meeting
with pool companies to repair the Reflection Pond at the
Municipal Library.
The next meeting will be hold Wednesday, March 15, 1989, at
3:00 p.m. in B-3 of the Municipal Office Complex.
