ARTS COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF GLENDALE, HELD
AT THE MUNICIPAL OFFICE COMPLEX BASEMENT CONF-
ERENCE ROOM, 5850 W. GLENDALE AVENUE ON WEDNESDAY

CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order by Chairwoman Marie Sands at 3:00 p.m. with
the following members present: Betty Wade, Lowell Rogers, Nelda Crowell,
and Dr. Joseph Atkins. Enid Abel and Robert Page were absent. Also present
was Beverley Miller, Staff Coordinator for the Arts Commission, Lupe Jasso,

DISCUSSION
Marie presented the loan agreement from the Heard Museum for the 2 Navaho
rugs. The Heard stipulated the loan period to be from March 13 to June 30.
These rugs are not for sale, but if we decided we wanted to purchase a rug(s),
there are other rugs we can buy. Beverley will have the agreement signed and
returned to the Heard Museum.
Next, Marie mentioned that she had spoken to Enid, and had put her in charge
of quest tags for the reception. These tags will be name stickers, -identifying
the Mayor and Council, the Artists and spouses, the Arts Commissioners and
spouses, and City Staff.
Next, Lupe Jasso presented an idea for discussion from the 75th Anniversary
Committee. The 75th Anniversary Committee, on behalf of the City of Glendale
would like to thank all of the people who have made contributions toward the
75th Anniversary celebration. Their idea was to have an etching made of the
Glendale Pioneers. Lupe had spoken with Richard Szwarocky, and he had no
objections to doing this. A photographer would be hired to photograph the
model and the etching would be made form the photograph. Marie individually
asked the commissioners their thoughts on this. Betty Wade, Dr. Atkins, and
Lowell Rogers favored the idea, Nelda Crowell did not approve of the idea.
With that, Lupe will proceed with the project. Next, Debbie Gessner presented
her clay model(s) of the irrigator. She presented the following prices:
Single Figure 4'
high
$12,000 -
$14,000
Three Figures 4'
high
34,000 -
141,000
Single Figure 6'
high
18,700 -
22,500
Three Figures 6'
high
54,000 -
65,000
The Commissioners asked Debbie questions concerning the model. She said that
she would like an opportunity to sculpt another design which she had roughly
outlined on a piece of paper. The commission decided to invite Debbie back
to their next meeting to present her idea. Next, Joe Atkins reported that
he had spoken with Richard Szwarocky and the wood carving will be 1' longer
and deeper. He said he was satisfied that everything was going along well.
We will periodically get reports on the progress Richard is making.
