HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 5/1/2017CITY OF GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY AUDITORIUM — FIRST FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET, GLENDALE, ARIZONA MONDAY, MAY 1, 2017 ' 4:30 P.M. The meeting was called to order at approximately 5:OOpm by Chairperson Carrie Richards. Vice Chair Eva Ndavu and Commissioners, Bernadette Bolognini, Mark Fast, Thomas Cole, Cheryl Gangemi and Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti were in attendance. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts and Culture Program Manager, Mike Beck, Chief Librarian, and Jana Weldon, Part-time Associate. Approval of Minutes — None FY2017-2018 Performing Arts Partnership Program — Project Proposals Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Program Manager announced the forum for the FY 2017-18 Performing Arts Partnership Grant Program. She noted that 11 applications had been submitted. The Commissioners heard presentations from the applicants and reviewed each application. Each applicant organization made a 10 - minute presentation and answered questions from the Commissioners. After a detailed discussion, the Arts Commission made its selection and voted to forward the project funding recommendations to the Glendale City Council. The Commissioners commented that all the applications submitted this cycle had been fantastic, therefore, they were glad to recommend all 11 to City Council for funding. Ms. Vahabzadeh agreed and noted that the proposals selected will go before City Council for formal approval in early June 2017. Below is a summary of the 11 applications selected: • ABT Performing Arts Association, will perform four Theatres forYoung Audiences plays based on children's books including A Charlie Brown Christmas, Charlotte's Web and Jack and the Beanstalk. • Ballet Arizona will conduct the "Class Act Intensive Program" with 4th and 5th graders at Don Mensendick Elementary School. • Center Dance Ensemble will present the 2017-18 School Tour. There will be nine performances at five Glendale Elementary School District schools. • Childsplay will present four performances for after-school and weekend audiences. They will perform Tomas and the Library Lady and Maddi's Fridge, one performance of each play at the Main Library and Foothills Library. • Driftwood Quintet will conduct "A Driftwood Christmas featuring Ellington's Nutcracker Suite" in December at the Glendale Adult Center. Two musical sets will feature special arrangements for a reed quintet by members of the group and a guest artist. • Kawambe-Omowale African Drum and Dance will conduct four drumming/dance workshops and jewelry making classes for youth; the project will culminate into a musical performance for parents and the community at the Roots location in the O'Neil Recreational Center. • Mill Ave Chamber Players will present Live at the Library, a series of six musical performances to be held at the Glendale Main Library Auditorium on the fourth Thursday evening of the month, from September 2017 through April 2018. • Phoenix Conservatory of Music will partner with schools in the Glendale Elementary School District No. 40 who serve Title One populations to facilitate the program, After School Music, Enrichment and Learning. • The Phoenix Symphony will perform two concerts with interactive lessons and dialogue for grades 4-8 at the Don Mensendick School. • ProMusica Arizona's Women in Song, 16 singers and an accompanist, will conduct community concerts at various Glendale senior living facilities and at the Glendale Adult Center. • West Valley Arts Council will collaborate with the Phoenix Theatre and present an art therapy program in the pediatric wing at Banner Thunderbird Hospital over a 12- week period. 2 Additional information: Total amount available for FY 2017-18 grants: $44,000 Maximum amount available per applicant: $4,000 Projects selected must take place from June 30, 2017 to July 1, 2018. Chairperson Carrie Richards called for a motion on this item. A MOTION was MADE by Vice Chair Ndavu to Recommend Approval of 11 Performing Arts Projects in the amount of $4,000 each, for the FY 2017-2018 Performing Arts Partnership Grant Program. Commissioner Cole SECONDED the MOTION. The vote carried unanimously. Staff Updates Commission Comments Adjournment Chairperson Carrie Richards asked for a motion to adjourn. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Gangemi to ADJOURN the meeting, Commissioner Bolognini SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously.
