ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:01pm by Vice Chair Eva
Ndavu. Commissioners, Bernadette Bolognini, Mark Fast, Thomas Cole, Cheryl
Gangemi and Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti were in attendance. Chairperson Carrie
Richards was absent and excused.
Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts and Culture Program
Manager, and Mike Beck, Chief Librarian.
Approval of Minutes - February 23, 2017
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Bolognini to APPROVE the Arts
Commission meeting minutes from the February 23, 2017 meeting, as written.
Commissioner Fast SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously.
Business From the Floor
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public. The
Commission, however, may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the
agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no comments.
Centerline District Arts and Culture Initiative — Applicant Presentation
Staff provided an introduction to The Centerline Arts and Cultural Initiative, which
is an application -based, competitive funding opportunity. Applicants are invited to
present their proposals before the Glendale Arts Commission for funding
consideration. The Commission heard a presentation from a member of Childsplay,
Inc.
Jamie Sandomire, an actor with Childsplay said they were a nationally and
internationally respected professional theatre company founded in 1977. She said
the theatre's chosen audience is children. Childsplay promotes that young people
deserve to experience challenging, thought-provoking theatre of the highest artistic
quality.
Childsplay's application proposes two free play performances. They proposed to
have one performance at Landmark Elementary School and one performance for
the community at the same school. There will be a question and answer segment at
the end of each program for the students entertainment and information.
Vice Chair Eva Ndavu inquired about the show times. Ms. Sandomire replied that
they usually work with the schools to decide on show times.
Commissioner Bolognini asked if the play would be open to the entire school. Ms.
Sandomire said that depends on the school's schedule and recommendations.
Commissioner Bolognini commented that it would be great to have these
performances at other schools in Glendale, as well.
Commissioner Fast commented on the marketing that will be used to promote this
project. Ms. Sandomire explained their marketing agenda, which they use for all
their Childsplay performances.
Vice Chair Eva Ndavu called for a motion on this item.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to APPROVE the application
from Childsplay for the Centerline District Arts and Culture Initiative.
Commissioner Gangemi SECONDED the MOTION, which carried
unanimously.
FY 2017-18 Arts Projects Update
Staff updated the Commissioners providing details of upcoming projects from the
FY 2017-18 Annual Projects Plan.
Vote to change the date of the Anril
Staff requested the Commission vote to change the April 271h regular meeting to
Monday, May 0 at 4:30pm in the Auditorium of the Main Library. The change is
in order to facilitate the Annual Performing Arts Partnership Program grant
application review and selection process.
Vice Chair Eva Ndavu called for a motion on this item.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Bolognini to APPROVE changing
the date of the April 27, 2017 Meeting of the Arts Commission to Monday,

May 1, 2017. Commissioner Gangemi SECONDED the MOTION, which
carried unanimously.
Staff Updates
Summer Teen Program
Ms. Vahabzadeh stated the Summer Teen Program activity is now open for artists
to apply. Deadline for this opportunity is April 24, 2017.
Commission Comments
Adjournment
Vice Chair Eva Ndavu asked for a motion to adjourn.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Fast to ADJOURN the meeting.
Commissioner Cole SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously.
The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m.
The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Monday, May
1, 2017, @ 4:30 p.m., at the Auditorium, first floor, Glendale Public Library, 5959
West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona
