HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 2/23/2017CITY OF GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION MEETING BRARY GLENDALE PUBLIC LI LIBRARY BOARD ROOM - SECOND FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET, GLENDALE, ARIZONA THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 2017 6:OOPM The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:02 pm by Vice Chair Eva Ndavu. Chairperson Carrie Richards (arrived at 6:05) and Commissioners, Bernadette Bolognini, Mark Fast, Thomas Cole, and Helen Fokszanskyj-Conti were in attendance. Commissioner Cheryl Gangemi was absent and excused. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Arts and Culture Program Manager; Mike Beck, Chief Librarian and Jana Weldon, Part-time Associate. Lisa Baker attended the meeting as a public guest. Approval of Minutes — January 4, 2017 A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to APPROVE the Arts Commission meeting minutes from the January 4, 2017 meeting, as corrected. Commissioner Bolognini SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. Business From the Floor At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public. There were no comments. Centerline District Arts and Culture Initiative — Applicant Presentations Staff provided an introduction to The Centerline Arts and Cultural Initiative an application -based, competitive funding opportunity. Applicants are invited to present their proposals before the Glendale Arts Commission for funding consideration. The Commission heard presentation from two qualifying applicant organizations, Universal Access Productions and Driftwood Quintet. Driftwood Quintet provided their presentation stating that they were a reed quintet deeply dedicated to the expansion of reed quintet repertoire and the finding of new audiences. They are also an education outreach performance group'. A Driftwood I Quintet performance can include everything from orchestral masterpieces to songs from favorite video games. The majority of Driftwood's repertoire is producedby its three arrangers Ben Paley, Melissa Malork, and Dominique Holley. They can feature everything from orchestral and piano pieces. Driftwood Quintet presented their proposal, which included three performances integrating a children's concept, a Jazz co-op and an Orchestra masterworks. Vice Chair Eva Ndavu inquired as to the venue of the performances. She asked if they were going to be indoors or outdoors. Mr. Holley explained that they will be indoors. He also provided information on the type of marketing they will use, as well as the locations for the performances. He noted they were still trying to solidify one of them.. Chairperson Richards and Commissioner Cole both commented that this group was very professional and were glad to see they were targeting education. Commissioner Fast noted that they still needed to solidify their performance venues. However, he liked the concept because it had something for everyone....... The Commissioners were all very impressed with the presentation and were excited to see the performances. Vice Chair Ndavu called for a motion on this item. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to APPROVE the application from Driftwood Quintet for the Centerline District Arts and Culture Initiative. Chairperson Richards SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. Vice Chair Ndavu called for the next applicant. Chairperson Richards commented that she was unsure of who was actually the performing. She said the proposal was not very clear. She recommend solidify their proposal and present a set plan. Commissioner Cole noted the proposal seemed unpredictable, which was a concern. He'said these performances should be family friendly and for all audiences. He also had concerns with her marketing approach and her not able to elaborate on it other than it would be by a marketing professional fr Commissioner Bolognini noted that it might be best for her to re -apply for the fall, because of the heat. She said she had the same concerns as everyone else. Commissioner Fast agreed and added they should provide her the opportunity to re -apply with a set proposal next time, either in March or later. Vice Chair Ndavu called for a motion on this item. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Cole to DENY the application from Universal Access Productions for the Centerline District Arts and Culture Initiative. Chairperson Richards SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. FY 2016-17 Arts Projects Update Staff updated the Commissioners on the latest projects completed as well as, provided details of upcoming projects and the FY 2017-18 Performing Arts Partnership Program funding opportunity. Ms. Vahabzadeh stated that in preparation for the Performing Arts Program deadline on April 17, 2017, the Commission must set a date to review the applications. After some discussion, Monday, May 1, 2017 was tentatively selected as the review date. Staff Updates Staff provided an update on the Chocolate Affair and Plein Air events held February 3-5, 2017. She stated they had a good crowd attending this year. Ms. Vahabzadeh reminded the Commission that Monday, March 13th was the Coyote's Hockey game. She provided tickets to those able to attend courtesy of the City of Glendale. 3 Commission Comments Commissioner Fast commented on the Golf Course issue discussed last year. Adjournment Vice Chair Ndavu asked for a motion to adjourn. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Bolognini to ADJOURN the meeting. Commissioner Cole SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 7:30 pm The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2017, 6 p.m., in the Boardroom, second floor, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona.
