HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Library Advisory Board - Meeting Date: 12/14/2016City of Glendale Library Advisory Board Meeting Minutes Glendale Public Library, Foothills Library, Hummingbird Room 19055 North 57tb Avenue Glendale, Arizona 85308 Wednesday, December 14, 2016 6:00pm Call to Order - Chairperson Koora called the meeting to order at approximately 6:00pm. Roll Call Board Members in Attendance: Board members Ndavu, Kocur, Johnson, Heinzel, Vice Chairperson Collett and Chairperson Koory were present. Board members Lund and Aborne were absent and excused. Staff in Attendance: Michael Beck, Chief Librarian, and Kristen Fletcher-Spear, Administrative Librarian, were present from the City of Glendale. Aoprcval of Minutes - November 9.2016 Chairperson Koory called for a motion to approve the minutes. Board Member Ndavu referred to page 3, paragraph 4, and third sentence. It should read that he'is aware that the City of Glendale recycles the paper from their weeded paperback books and that creates revenues for the city.' Chairperson Koory referred to page 5, paragraph 2. She said that she noted 'the Mayor and Councilmembers Malnar and Turner were in attendance.' Board Member Ndavu made a motion to approve the November 91 2016 Regular Meeting Minutes as corrected. Board Member Johnson seconded the motion, which was approved with a vote of 6 to 0. Business From the Floor Chairperson Koory asked if there was any Business From The floor. There was none. Foothills Branch Librarv Tour Chairperson Koory called for this item. Mr. Beck introduced Kristin Fletcher-Spear. Ms. Fletcher-Spear took the Library Board on a one-hour guided tour of the Foothills Branch Library showcasing the drive-up window, newly carpeted meeting rooms and story time rooms, recent collection moves, and other areas of the library. The Foothills Branch Library is approximately a 33,500-square foot building with 200 parking spaces, with seven disabled parking spaces. There is one multipurpose room, which can be divided into two rooms with an occupancy of 180. There is one conference room which can accommodate 39 people. Also, there are two study group rooms, each with an occupancy of 4 persons. Ubrary Advlsory Board Mlnutes December L4,2016 Page 2 The drive-up service window is available for patrons wishing to remain in their vehicles and enjoying the convenience of drive-up service. The branch has three pieces of public art selected by the Glendale Arts Commission. The first, Twenty-Four Hours in the Sonoran Desert, which is a glass mural created by Melissa Paxton, the Magic Doors, located at the entrance of the Story Hour roorn, created by Kathy Bradford, and the Dale Chihuly Chandelier, located in the main lobby, were all shown to the Board. The Board thanked Ms. Fletcher-Spear for her time and the information she provided. 2016 Librarv Accomolishments Oveniew Chairperson Koory called for this item. Mr. Beck displayed a Prezi presentation highlighting the Board's accomplishments throughout the year. Mr. Beck began with the new teen space added at the Main Library. He explained there were sun sails added which helped to lower the temperature. At Velma Teague, a $200,000 Community Development Block Grant was completed, which allowed for new public fumiture, electical work, and painting. At Foothills, the carpeting was replaced in the meeting rooms. Also, upcoming will be the Heroes Park Library Architectural and Design Phase. He also spoke about the arts incubator concept. This would potentially be a new area, located in a city-owned building, which would allow artists to possibly work, showcase and sell their art. Mr. Beck spoke about Glendale University coming up in the spring. This is Glendale's civics program which explains the function and operation of each department in the city. He said there were approximately 1,500 new library cards issued during one single month, September, which is National Library Card Month. Mr. Beck reviewed some of the events which took place at the libraries such as Telebration, the Summer Reading Programs, the ASU Start-Up business progriams, and Pokdmon-Go at the Library which was a temendous success. He touched on the fines and fees study which is taking place in partnership with the Parks Division. Staffis reviewing the fines and fees and how they compare to other jurisdictions in the valley. Mr. Beck provided information on the Strategic Plan and added the new city manager uses the balance score card system. He said the city has four community centers. The libraries are parurering with the Parks and Recreation Department to be able to provide outreach programs of the available library resources. Mr. Beck noted the digital circulation continues to increase, with a 2l%oincrease over last year. Library Advisory Board Minutes December 14,2OtG Page 3 He said that Board Member Aborne had asked if the new bill pay machines would be bilingual. Yes, the machines have bi-lingual, English and Spanish capability. Chief Librarian Uodate Chairpenon Koory called for the Chief Librarian Update. LAB Coyotes Appreciation Game - Mr. Beck reminded the Board of the upcoming appreciation event, an Arizona Coyotes game, scheduled for December2l,2016 at 7:30pm which will be the Arizona Coyotes vs. the Edmonton Oilers. He polled the Board to see who planned to participate. Heroes Park Library Update - Mr. Beck said the architectural and design contract is on the City Council consent agenda for December 20,2016 at I l:00am. The Board and public is welcomed to attend. Other - Mr. Beck provided a few miscellaneous updates. He said staff is working on the upcoming budget and researching the feasibility in increasing the hours of operation. According to the latest Maricopa County Benchmark Survey, the City of Glendale has the lowest average number of operational hours of all major libraries in the valley. The LIBCON West Event was an event held recently to atract teens to the libraries and many of those who participated in the comicon events attended LIBCON. There were over 400 people in attendance. Library Advisorv Board Comments and Suss$tions - Chairperson Koory asked for comments or suggestions from the Board members. Board Member Ndavu said each branch has different hours. He suggested a brochure which shows each library's operation hours. Board Member Kocur said she had information which shows each library and its operating hours so it already exists. She believes it is a bookmark. Vice Chairperson Collett said she appreciated the tour. Board Member Heinzel said she also appreciated the tour and noted she was not aware of the quiet area offered. Board Member Johnson said he also liked the quiet area. Board Member Kocur said she has brought her grandson to the library and especially enjoyed the puppet shows offered by such talented staff. Vice Chairperson Collett stated her area of expertise is dealing with pre-school aged children. She said the children's play area of the library is very impressive and appropriate for young children. She asked if the stuffed animals are cleaned as they do carry the most genns. Mr. Beck said yes, he believes they are washed. Library Advisory Board Minutes December t4,2Ot6 Page 4 Adiournment- With no further business, Chairperson Koory called for a motion to adjourn. Vice Chairpenon Collett made a motion to adjourn. Board Member Johnson seconded the motion, which was appnoyed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at7:34pm. The next meeting will be held in the Large Meeting Room at the Main Library on Wednesday, January llr20l7, at 6:fi)pm.
