FINAL MINUTES
I. Call to Order - Approximately 6:00PM
Chairperson Wilson called the meeting to order at approximately
6:00pm. Board members Allen (arrived at 6: 10pm), Koory, Fallucca,
Shelly, Aborne, Collett, Lund, Vice Chairperson Sommer, and
Chairperson Wilson were present. Board member Gibala was absent
and excused.
Michael Beck, Chief Librarian, was present from the City of Glendale.
Mayor Weiers was also present. Jessie Pederson, Assistant to the
Mayor, was also present.
II. National Library Week Proclamation - Chairperson Wilson stated in
celebration of the American Library Association's Libraries Transform
campaign and National Library Week, Mayor Jerry Weiers presented to
the Library Advisory Board members a Mayoral Proclamation in
commemoration.
in. Approval of Minutes - March 9, 2016 - Chairperson Wilson asked if
there were any revisions or corrections to the minutes of March 9,
2016.
Board member Aborne stated she had an addition on page 2,
paragraph 9. She would like to have "Heroes Park" added after option
2 to clearly identify the location.
Vice Chairperson Sommer made a motion to accept the minutes
as corrected. Board member Aborne seconded the motion,
which was approved unanimously.
iv. Business From The Floor - Chairperson Wilson called for any
business from the floor. There was none.

v. Loyalty Oath of Office and Library Board Member Recognitions -
Chairperson Wilson called for this item.
Newly appointed Board member Lund took the Oath of Office and the
Board and Commission Oath. Also, Mr. Beck recognized outgoing
members Chairperson Wilson, Vice Chairperson Sommer, and Board
members Fallucca and Shelly.
vi. Nomination and Election for Vice-Chair New Term - Chairperson
Wilson called for this item. Board member Collett was nominated as
new Vice Chairperson.
Board member Koory made a motion to approve the
nomination. Board member Shelly seconded the motion, which
was approved unanimously.
Board member Collett accepted the nomination.
vii. Western Area Branch Library
Chairperson Wilson called for this item. Mr. Beck provided an update
for the Board stating Option #2, Heroes Park, would be going forward
as the recommended location for the Western Area Branch Library. He
added Option #1, the Media Center, is not being recommended.
Vice Chairperson Sommer asked if Mr. Beck was aware that there was
some type of meeting regarding Heroes Park attended by those
residing nearby. She said she saw this on one of the news channels.
Mr. Beck said he was unaware of any meeting. Board member Lund
said this was headed by previous Council member Alvarez and Mr.
Tom Traw.
Mr. Beck explained that staff had reached out to the citizens in many
fashions in order to obtain citizen input. He added there were two
open houses held to also gather input. Chairperson Wilson added staff
went to extreme measures to advertise the open houses and to also be
sure the word was communicated out to the community.
Board member Aborne asked if the Heroes Park group is interested in
the park more than the future library at the park. Board members
confirmed the group was concerned with park issues only.

She added this is the beginning of the library, not what the citizens are
accepting to be the final product. When the monies are available, the
library should be expanded.
Board member Lund asked about the parking. Mr. Beck said there
would be a total of 136 parking spaces planned.
Board member Aborne commended the staff for all their hard work
regarding the Heroes Park Library.
VIII. Chief Librarian Update - Chairperson Wilson called for the Chief
Librarian Update. Mr. Beck presented and updated members on
current library activities, operations and projects.
• Gila River Indian Community Grant - Mr. Beck explained that
this grant, if awarded, would be applied toward new laptops,
which could better handle any gaming applications. He said the
existing laptops are six to eight years old and cannot
accommodate the gaming applications. Staff is diligently
working on reorganizing the teen areas of the Main Library and
to accommodate the new business area.
• Upcoming Programs - Mr. Beck noted a few upcoming events
taking place during the month of April mainly the Cinco de Mayo
event scheduled for April 30 and May 1, 2016. On April 23,
2016, at 10:00am the Foothills Branch Library will be holding its
bi-annual used book sale. The Friends Barnes and Noble
fundraiser will take place at 75th Avenue on the south side of Bell
Road on May 14 and 15, 2016.
• Other - He noted the city's budget process is currently taking
place. Mr. Beck talked about Baker & Taylor & Midwest Tape as
the library's primary vendors and the discounts they receive. Mr.
Beck, and other staff, were fortunate enough to attend the Public
Library Association Conference in Denver. He said this was a
great opportunity for learning and to see what other libraries are
utilizing. He added there is a library that has a vinyl cutter. He
said this is used not only by staff but also by the public to make
signage. Mr. Beck noted an all-in-one bill pay self-check
machine was going to be installed at the Foothills Library. He
showed a video of how this machine functions for the Board.
The cost is approximately $21,000.

Board member Lund asked if there is an equipment budget. And if this
is replaced, is there a market to get any monies from the old
equipment. Mr. Beck said because of customer demand the existing
machines would be used until they no longer function.
She asked if only new equipment would be placed in the Heroes Park
Library. Mr. Beck confirmed that in the current plan only new items
would be installed in the new library.
ix. Library Advisory Board Comments and Suggestions -
Chairperson Wilson asked for comments or suggestions from the Board
members. Board member Allen welcomed new Commissioner Lund.
Board member Collett stated she attended and enjoyed the recent
Volunteer Event hosted by the City. She also thanked the Board
members and expressed how appreciative she was of them and how
thankful she was to be part of the Library Board.
Board member Shelly said it's been a pleasure and an honor to
participate on the Board and serve the community.
Board member Fallucca stated she was glad to be part of the Library
Board and she learned so much.
Board member Aborne said the City of Glendale began their Farmers'
Market recently and the Library Board and the Friends of the Library
were invited to host a community table. She distributed a letter of
thanks to each departing Board member.
Board member Koory thanked the Chairperson and Vice Chairperson
for their commitment to the Library Board. She also welcomed Board
member Mickey Lund. She said she has had some great fun being a
member.
Chairperson Wilson thanked staff and her fellow board members. She
encouraged everyone to continue to campaign for the needs of
libraries. She added the City is fortunate to have Mr. Beck. She hopes
the Board continues to communicate with the council members to
continue making improvements to the libraries on behalf of the
citizens. She said the libraries should be open more often in order to
better serve its citizens.

Board member Lund stated she was impressed by the addition of a
teen member on the Board. She thanked the Board for their welcome.
x. Adjournment - With no further business, Chairperson Wilson
adjourned the meeting at 7:06pm.
The next meeting will be held in the Large Meeting Room at the Main
Library on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 6:00pm.
