ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY

The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:08 pm by Chairperson Carrie Richards.
Commissioners,Nadine Yuhasz, Bernadette Bolognini, Eva Ndavu and Mark Fast were in
attendance. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator,Mike
Beck, Chief Librarian, and Erik Strunk, Director,Community Services Department. Vice Chair
Ann Owens and Commissioner Thomas Cole were absent and excused.
Special Guest: Councilmember Ray Malnar stopped by briefly to introduce himself.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES—NOVEMBER 19,2015
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Bolognini to APPROVE the Arts Commission
meeting minutes from the November 19,2015 meeting,as written. Commissioner Yuhasz
SECONDED the MOTION,which carried unanimously.
BUSINESS FROM THE FLOOR
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public. The Commission,however,
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. Councilmember Ray Malnar introduces himself to the Commission and said a few words
thanking the Commission for their work and dedication to the city.
LOYALTY OATH OF OFFICE AND INTRODUCTIONS
Newly appointed Commissioner Mark Fast(Cholla District)took the Boards and Commissions
Loyalty Oath of Office and introduced himself to the Commissioners.
FY 2016-17 ANNUAL ARTS PROJECTS PLAN
Staff and the Arts Commission discussed considering projects and programs for the purpose of
developing the FY 2016-17 Arts Projects Plan. As per the City of Glendale Arts Ordinance,the
Arts Commission shall develop an annual arts projects plan with the appropriate city staff for the
purpose of making recommendations to City Council. This is being done in an attempt to align
with the city of Glendale's FY2016-17 budget process.
Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator,reviewed the arts project plan and the fund
amounts associated with each project. She asked for input from the Commissioners or any
questions or additions. She reviewed Glendale's Signature Events as well as the Centerline
District Arts and Cultural Activities plans. She explained that any discretionary program funding
will have to come before the Commission. She noted that as project opportunities become
available,the Commission will have the opportunity to consider each and recommend for
approval.

The projects below reflect the recommended Arts Projects Plan for FY 2016-17.
• IN FLUX Cycle 7 Valley-wide Initiative—Temporary Art Installation$4,000
• Juried Fine Arts Show—Annual Art Purchase $2,000
• FY 2017-18 Performing Arts Partnership Program $44,000
• FY 2016-17 Youth&Teen Arts Summer Activity $10,000
• Gallery Glendale at Westgate& Civic Center Gallery
❖ Monthly gallery maintenance, art exhibits and events $6,500
• Annual Arts Maintenance $7,000
• Community Arts Activities $5,000
• Centerline District Arts&Cultural Activities
❖ Interactive Arts Experience at the Glitter and Glow $4,000
❖ Interactive Arts Experience at the Chocolate Affaire $4,000
❖ Plein Air Painting Competition at the Chocolate Affaire $2,750
❖ Discretionary Programming Fund $39,250
Total $128,500
Chairperson Richards asked for a motion and vote.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Bolognini to RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF
THE FY 2016-17 ARTS PROJECT PLAN. Commissioner Yuhasz SECONDED the
MOTION,which carried unanimously.
GLENDALE ARTS COUNCIL JURIED FINE ARTS EXHIBIT
The Arts Commission reviewed the Glendale Arts Council Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibit and
selected the purchase awards for the Municipal Art Collection. The artwork selected by the
Commission will be installed in a city building. Per the adopted FY 2015-2016 Arts Plan,the
total purchase not to exceed$2,000.
The Commission walked around to view each artwork and discussed their selections. After a
lively discussion,they narrowed their choices. The Commissioners discussed each of their
selections in detail coming up with a unanimous recommendation.
Chairperson Richards asked for a motion and vote.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Yuhasz to APPROVE the FY 2015-2016 ARTS
PLAN PURCHASE OF "Black Dog"by Gary Smathers in the amount of$1,800.
Commissioner Bolognini SECONDED the MOTION,which carried unanimously.
After the vote,Ms. Vahabzadeh invited everyone to the preview party for Glendale Arts Council
Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibit this weekend. She said they should have all received their
invitations in the mail.

Erik Strunk,Director, Community Services Department stated the Councilmember Turner who is
an art aficionado has invited everyone to attend. He stated there was no charge for the
Commissioners for this event and it was a great way to connect with the public and the art world.
He hopes they all can attend.
STAFF UPDATES
• Gallery Glendale—Update
Gallery Glendale will feature Feathers&Fur, a Juried Photography Exhibition from 6:00pm to
9:00 p.m.,Fridays and Saturdays. The exhibit will run from January 1st to 30th. The Opening
night reception is scheduled for Saturday,January 9th, from 6:00pm to 9:00 p.m. The artwork
will be available for sale.
• Glitter and Glow
The Glendale Glitter&Glow event will be held January 10th,from 4:00pm-10:00 pm.
• Chocolate Affaire
Th Annual Glendale Chocolate Affaire will be held in Historic Downtown Glendale,February 5,
6& 7. The Plein Air Painting Competition will be held in downtown Glendale on Saturday,
February 6. Judging will take place at 4 p.m.
• Arts Congress Event
Ms. Vahabzadeh provided information on the Arts Congress event. She stated the Arts Congress
2016 event is scheduled from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm, on Thursday,February 4th, on the Senate
Lawn of the Arizona State Capitol. The day will feature workshops and other activities for
participants interested in becoming more active as arts advocates. Ms. Vahabzadeh noted they
will also provide advocacy training and materials, as well as, lunch on the lawn.

There were no comments.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to adjourn.
A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Bolognini to ADJOURN the meeting
Commissioner Ndavu SECONDED the MOTION,which carried unanimously.
