HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 9/24/2015 CITY OF GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION MEETING GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD ROOM—SECOND FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24,2015 6:00PM The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:05pm by Chairperson Carrie Richards. Vice Chair Ann Owens, Commissioners Nadine Yuhasz,Joan Graham, and Eva Ndavu were in attendance. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator,Michael Beck, Chief Librarian and Jana Weldon,Part-time Associate. Commissioners Thomas Cole and Bernadette Bolognini were absent and excused. APPROVAL OF MINUTES—August 27,2015 A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Yuhasz to APPROVE the Arts Commission meeting minutes from the August 27,2015 meeting. Commissioner Graham SECONDED the MOTION,which carried unanimously. BUSINESS FROM THE 9FLOOR At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public. The Commission, however, may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no comments from the floor. LOYALTY OATH OF OFFICE Arts Commission,Vice Chair Anne Owens(Sahuaro District) and new Commissioner Eva Ndavu(Cactus District) signed the Boards and Commissions Loyalty Oath of Office. INTRODUCTIONS Staff introduced new Commissioner Eva Ndavu to the group. The rest of the commissioners introduced themselves to the new member. THE SPECIAL EVENTS COLLABORATIONS WITH THE PUBLIC ART PROGRAM Martin Dickey, Special Events Division Manager,presented information about Special Events and discussed opportunities for interactive arts projects at the upcoming signature events. He talked about the six outstanding signature events and how they are recognized nationwide. He noted that the festivals attract an average of 350,000 visitors annually. Mr. Dickey shared many recent awards won by the Special Events Division. He said the City of Glendale was committed to the success and future growth of each of the festivals. In closing,Mr. Dickey thanked the Arts Commission for their support and assistance throughout the years and expressed his appreciation for the longstanding history of project collaborations between his office and the Public Art Program. 1 THE PORTABLE ART COLLECTION ACQUISITIONS POLICY DISCUSSION The Arts Commission discussed developing the criteria they will use in the future when reviewing works of art for purchase/gift to the municipal portable art collection. Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator, explained that this discussion was a part of the FY 2015/16 Arts Commission goal to review and update the"City of Glendale Guidelines for the Arts. Jana Weldon,Part-time Associate,presented a PowerPoint discussion on developing policies for art collection management,including acceptance of gifts. She asked the Commission to look over the presented guidelines to see if they would like to add or modify any of the criteria or conditions discussed. ARTS AND ECONOMIC PROSPERITY STUDY Staff presented the fmdings of the 2010 West Valley study. The Arts Commission discussed the opportunityto participate in the upcoming"Arts and Economic Prosperity V" study. Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator explained that this comprehensive national study was conducted in partnership with local arts organizations every five years to measure the economic impact of the nonprofit arts and culture industry and its audiences at local and national levels. Chairperson Richards asked for a motion on this item. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Ndavu to APPROVE the Arts Commission participation in the ARTS AND ECONOMIC PROSPERITY STUDY. Vice Chair Owens SECONDED the MOTION,which carried unanimously. STAFF UPDATES GALLERY GLENDALE Gallery Glendale presents "The Silkscreen Six": A Monosilkscreen Print Exhibition being held Fridays and Saturdays from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, October 2nd to October 31st. The opening night will be held on October 9th 25TH INTERNATIONAL SCULPTURE CONFERENCE The International Sculpture Center will host the 25th International Sculpture Conference:New Frontiers in Sculpture in Phoenix from November 4th thru the 7th.The conference promises to bring together artists,arts administrators, curators,patrons, students, and sculpture enthusiasts for new discoveries in the field of sculpture. The cost to attend is $400. IN FLUX For the last three seasons, Glendale Public Art has participated in IN FLUX, a Valley-wide, multi-city initiative to activate vacant storefronts with original art installations by local artists. This year the Call to Artist brought in over 60 applicants who submitted their applications before the deadline. Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator, stated the next step in the process is to make the selections. She asked for two volunteers from the Arts Commission to be on the 2 panel to review the applications. Chairperson Richards and Vice Chair Owen volunteered. This year the panel will convene on October 5th at 9:15am to 5:00pm at Tempe Public Library. COMMISSION COMMENTS Vice Chair Owen commented on her recent excursion to the 7th Annual Grand Canyon Celebration of Art. This year it was held on September 12th to the 20th on the South Rim. The Plein Air Celebration is a weeklong event open to the general public to observe artists paintings. She encouraged everyone to attend this wonderful event. She noted everyone should try to attend this event at least once. She said it was truly amazing to be out enjoying the beauty of the Canyon and art at the same time. ADJOURNMENT Chairperson Richards asked for a motion to adjourn. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Yuhasz to ADJOURN the meeting. Commissioner Graham SECONDED the MOTION,which carried unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 7:20 pm. The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Thursday,October 22, 2015, 6 p.m., at the Large Meeting Room, first floor, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale,Arizona.
