Library Advisory Board Meeting Minutes

Call to Order
Chairperson Wilson called the meeting to order at approximately 6:00pm. Board
members Shelly, Grajeda, Fallucca, Collett, Vice Chairperson Sommer, and
Chairperson Wilson were in attendance.
Michael Beck, Chief Librarian, and Karen Reed, Library Manager, were present
from the City of Glendale.
In the audience was previous Chairperson of the Board Karen Aborne.

Approval of Minutes — March 11, 2015 — Chairperson Wilson asked if there
were any revisions or corrections to the minutes of March 11, 2015.
Board member Fallucca stated she could not vote for approval, as her comments
should have been included in the minutes.
After some discussion, there was a motion made by Vice Chairperson Sommer to
table the minutes. Board member Shelly seconded the motion, which was
approved unanimously.
Chairperson Wilson called for a motion for the minutes of April 8, 2015.
Vice Chairperson Sommer noted recognition of her appointment, as Vice
Chairperson should be included in the minutes.
Mr. Beck said Board member Fallucca, although absent, was excused. That
should be noted as well.
Board member Grajeda made a motion to approve the April 8, 2015,
minutes as revised. Board member Collett seconded the motion, which
passed unanimously.
ui. Business from the Floor— Chairperson Wilson asked for any Business from the
Floor. Ms. Karen Aborne, Glendale citizen, introduced herself and stated she
would be returning to the Board for a third term. She asked if when the Board
tours the Media Center could there also be a tour of the book dispenser building
proposed then as well. Ms. Aborne stated that Council member Aldama asked to

extend the library hours for the summer at Velma Teague. She said she was
interested if the library would be opening early, stay open later, or what was
being proposed.
iv. Library Board Member Recognition
Mr. Michael Beck, Chief Librarian, recognized outgoing Board member Grajeda
for his service. Board member Grajeda was the teen member volunteering on
the Board. The Board wished him well in his future endeavors.
v. Velma Teague Branch Library Tour and Renovation — Chairperson Wilson
called for this item. Mr. Beck and Administrative Librarian Greg Kinder provided
a walking tour of the newly renovated Velma Teague Library. Mr. Kinder
provided details as to what had been removed and replaced beginning with the
carpet, which was 17 years old. He stated the adult computer lab was relocated
to the Adult area of the library thus keeping adults somewhat out of the children's
area. The Board took a walking tour of the Velma Teague Library (6:16pm to
6:31 pm).
vi. Summer Reading Program — Chairperson Wilson called for this item. Ms.
Merideth Jenson-Benjamin, Administrative Librarian for Public Service at the
Main Library, said the Summer Reading Program has been offered for many
years.
She said reading over the summer helps kids do better when they return to
school. Studies conducted since 1970 show that kids who do not read during the
summer vacation could possibly be as much as two grades behind those children
who do read.
She added it has been proven that reading relieves stress.
Ms. Jenson-Benjamin discussed the library's upcoming summer reading
programs through a Prezi demonstration. She provided some background
regarding the program from what it has been in the past and what is taking place
this year.
She noted the summer reading program will be open for all ages and runs from
June 1 through August 1.
Ms. Jenson-Benjamin reviewed some other upcoming summer events coming to
the libraries.
Board member Fallucca asked if there was a paper application that she could
distribute to encourage people to apply for a library card. Ms. Jenson-Benjamin
said no, and explained the process.

Ms. Jenson-Benjamin added at the peak of the program there were 7,000 youth
enrolled in the Summer Reading Program. She added there is no budget for this
program next year.
Board member Grajeda asked if there would be additional venues added to the
Culture Pass Program. Ms. Jenson-Benjamin said there would not be any
added. In fact, she said the Children's Museum would no longer be participating
at the end of May and The Phoenix Zoo would no longer be participating after
June 2015.

vu. Chief Librarian Update
Chairperson Wilson asked for the Chief Librarian Update. Mr. Beck presented
and updated members on current library activities, operations and projects.
• Main Library Carpet Installation — Mr. Beck said on Friday, May 15, the
Main Library would have new carpet installed in all the public areas. He
noted the carpet was approximately 25 years old.
• Two LSTA (Library Services Technology Act) Grants Awarded — Mr. Beck
said two grants were awarded totaling approximately $64,000. These are
federal funds administrated through the Arizona State Library. Ms. Reed
provided more details of the grants received. The first was entitled, "Tell
Your Story at Your Library", and carries a literary focus. A total of$22,450
was received from this grant request. Ms. Reed said the second was
written by Kristen Fletcher-Spear and was entitled, "Do Something Atat
Your Library", which was awarded in the amount of $39,689. This was to
increase technology skills and digital literacy of the patrons.
• Media Center Library Concept — Mr. Beck said staff was advised to
explore the possibility of having a library located on the third floor of the
Media Center.
• Upcoming Programs — Ms. Reed reminded that the Summer Reading
Program would begin June 1.
• Other — Mr. Beck read information received from the Economic
Development Department regarding the potential location of the light rail
through the downtown area of the City of Glendale. They are looking for
volunteers to apply to provide input, suggestions, and concerns.

Board member Fallucca asked if the Board would be vacating its summer
meetings. Chairperson Wilson said no as there were many upcoming items,
which needed to be discussed.
Board member Grajeda said he was excited about the summer reading program.
As this was his last meeting, he thanked the Board members for allowing him to
participate and serve his community.
Vice Chairperson Sommer thanked the staff for their dedication and assistance.
She stated she was proud to be part of the Board.
ix. Adjournment — With no further business, Chairperson Wilson adjourned the
meeting at 7:27pm.
The next regular meeting will be in the Large Meeting Room at the Main Library
on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at 6 PM.
