HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 10/23/2014CITY OF GLENDALE ARTS COMMISSION MEETING GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY THE LARGE MEETING ROOM - FIRST FLOOR THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2014 5959 WEST BROWN STREET The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:07pm by Chairperson Ladd. Commissioners Jessica Koory, Joan Graham, Anne Owens, and Carrie Richards were in attendance. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator. Commissioner Nadine Yuhasz was absent and excused. Commissioner Marilyn E resigned. BUSINESS FROM THE FLOOR At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public. The Commission, however, may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no public comments. NEW COMMISSIONER /LOYALTY OATH OF OFFICE /INTRODUCTIONS The Commission welcomed new Commissioner Carrie Richards. Commissioner Richards stated she has lived in Glendale for 40 years and attended Glendale High School. She is an artist who loves to paint. She decided to get involved in her community at the local level and choose the Arts Commission since she loves the arts. Commissioners welcomed her and introduced themselves. Commissioner Carrie Richards (Cholla - Mayoral) took the Boards and Commissions Loyalty Oath of Office. Commissioners Jessica Koory (Ocotillo), Carol Ladd (Cactus), and Anne Owens (Barrel) took the Boards and Commissions Loyalty Oath of Office for their new terms. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES Chairperson Ladd asked for a motion to approve the minutes. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Koory to APPROVE the Arts Commission meeting minutes of June 26, 2014 as corrected. Commissioner Owens SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. REVIEW OF FY 2013-14 ACCOMPLISHMENTS Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, presented an overview of the many accomplishments the Public Arts Program provided over the course of the past fiscal year. The information presented was based on the FY 2013-14 Projects Plan, which was formally approved by the Arts Commission on August 15, 2013 and amended by the Commission on December 19, 2013. She noted that many of the information being discussed today was shared at the last Arts Commission Meeting. She was glad new Commissioner Richards was benefiting from this review. FY 2014-15 ANNUAL ARTS PROJECT PLAN Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, provided a summary overview of the FY 2014-15 Annual Arts Projects Plan. The Arts Commission discussed implementation of projects and programs outlined in the FY 2014-15 Annual Arts Projects Plan, which was formally approved by the Arts Commission on June 26, 2014: Arts Projects Budget: $89,165 Required Expenditures: Gallery Glendale at Westgate 2nd Year Lease $5,000 Administrative and Maintenance - $20,000 Discretionary Expenditures: Creative Space at the Glendale Public Library - $4,000 In Flux Cycle 5 - Temporary Art for Vacant Storefronts - $4,000 Plein Air @ Chocolate Affaire - $1,750 Interactive Arts @ Glitter & Glow - $4,000 Juried Fine Art Show & Annual Art Purchase - $2,000 FY 2015/16 Performing Arts Partnership Program - $36,000 2015 Summer Art Camps - $8,000 Civic Center Art Gallery $2,000 Community Arts Activities $2,000 TOTAL $88,750 STAFF UPDATES Gallery Glendale at Westgate The Glendale Community College Faculty Art Show will be featured at the gallery for the month of November. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator said that for the month of January, leading up to the Super Bowl, she is planning a history of the Super Bowl photographic exhibit at the gallery in partnership with the Associated Press. The Associated Press is the official distributor of NFL photography. Complete details of this exhibit will be forthcoming as plans are solidified. New Photographic Project Proposal Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator provided an update on a potential project request from the Glendale Police Department. Photographer, Roni Ziemba is internationally known for her work. She indicated that her area of expertise is public safety in action photography. The purpose of this project request is to document the Public Safety Department in action during the Super Bowl in Glendale. 2 She explained that the Arts Commission and the Police Department will be involved in photo selection which will be exhibited at the Civic Center. She added that eventually the photos would become part of the City of Glendale Arts collection and displayed at the Public Safety Training Facility. Ms. Vahabzadeh stated this project request will be added as an agenda item at the next meeting. The Commission will have an opportunity to review and vote on this proposal. Guidelines for the Arts Ms. Vahabzadeh stated that this year, the Commission will conduct a review of the Guidelines for the Arts 2005, in an effort to update the document which serves as the guiding policy document for the Arts Program. November Meeting Date Change Mcjgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, suggested the Commission move the next Arts Commission meeting to November 20, 2014 because of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Everyone agreed. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Koory provided a brief summary on the IN FLUX Cycle 5 application process, the 133 applicants and the artist, Mary P. Neubauer, who was competitively selected by members of the Arts Commission to create the IN FLUX installation in Glendale. Commissioner Owens provided a brief account of her experience at the Grand Canyon's Plein Air Event she attended. Once again everyone gave a big welcome to new Commissioner Carrie Richards. Since there were no further comments; Chairperson Ladd asked for a motion to adjourn. A MOTION was MADE by Commissioner Graham to ADJOURN the meeting. Commissioner Koory SECONDED the MOTION, which carried unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 7:45pm. The next meeting is scheduled for November 20, 2014, at 6:00pm in the Boardroom, Second Floor, Glendale Main Library, and 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona.
