Chairperson Aborne had asked the Board members at their March meeting
to return to April's meeting with suggestions or topics of interest for the
upcoming fiscal year. Chairperson Aborne distributed information to the
Board, which may be helpful in gathering topics of interest.
Board member Wilson said that although it would be nice for the Mayor and
Council to attend a Board meeting, it might be more beneficial and
interesting to them to attend an event they could actually participate in by
doing something such as reading a story to children. The Board agreed
ample notice of any activities must be given to the Mayor and Council as
their calendars fill quickly.
Board member Shelly suggested each member find an event, which might
be of interest to their respective Council member.
The Chair reminded the Board to have topics for discussion for the May
meeting.
VI. National Library Week Snapshot Day
Ms. Cheryl Kennedy distributed a matrix showing the Board members what
type of information library staff would be gathering on Snapshot Day, April
15, 2014. She said some of the data to be collected would include door
counts, circulation - adult and teen, number of library cards issued,
reference interviews, and resume or job search assistance. She asked the
Board for any items which might need to be added to the matrix. The
Board felt Ms. Kennedy had captured all the pertinent questions and they

Friends of the Library Facebook and Website - Ms. Kennedy said the Friends
are making great progress and now have a Facebook page at
www.facebook.com/gazfol. She suggested for all to view and "like" their
page.
The Creative Space - Ms. Kennedy said the Creative Space is being well
received with 12 in attendance for the first instructional class. There were
two labs for the first instructional class where 10 and 12 persons were in
attendance. She noted 15 persons is maximum capacity of the room.
Main Library landscaping - Ms. Kennedy explained the landscaping at the
Main Library was going to be redesigned. Water Services has received a
grant for rainwater harvesting from National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
There will be plants removed and replaced with native plants. This specific
area will be contoured and rainwater will water this area. Ms. Kennedy
added volunteers from FedEx would be donating their time and manpower
for this project.
Books for Good - Ms. Kennedy said the Glendale Libraries are striving to
increase revenue from book sales by listing book donations on the Books
for Good website overseen by the Phoenix Public Library Friends. These
higher resale valued books which were recently sold in the libraries' book
sales for only a few dollars are now being sold at higher prices. She said
the Phoenix Public Library Friends pick up the items and list the books on
the site. Recently, she noted there was one book, which sold for $200
bringing the Glendale libraries a nice profit.
Gallery Glendale Thank you Letters - Ms. Kennedy said she gathered all
Board members' signatures and had mailed them to Mr. Teetsel and Ms.
Andrews.

Board member Sommer said Chairperson, Karen Aborne did a great job at
the Council meeting when the proclamation was presented. She said the
audience was impressed by the statistics regarding the libraries.
Board member Wilson said she attended an event at the Glendale Chamber
of Commerce and was introduced to Lea Benson, Streetlight USA. She said
Ms. Benson is the president of this organization, which provides a safe
haven and home for victims of human trafficking and child sexual
exploitation. Board member Wilson added that she has created a draft
library calendar of events which displays local, Glendale, and national
events.
Last, she wanted to commend Chairperson Aborne for receiving the
proclamation at the City Council meeting. She did a wonderful job speaking
to the audience of the benefits of the library and getting the Board up in
front of those in attendance.
Chairperson Aborne restated her concerns with interested parties being
able to find the location of Wee Readers. She said Board member Sommer
had walked over to the nearby splash pad and gathered a few people to
participate bringing the total to 23 people. She felt the advertisement of
the Glendale Gallery does not sufficiently indicate where to find it and the
best place to park.
Adjournment Board member Wilson made a motion to adjourn
the meeting. Board member Shelly seconded the motion, which
was approved unanimously. The meeting concluded at 7:19pm.
The next regular meeting will be in the Large Meeting Room at the Main
Library on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 6 PM.
Respectfully Submitted,
Cheryl - -nnedy
