MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION
HELD TUESDAY,APRIL 15,2014

5:30 p.m.
The meeting was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by Chairperson Carol Ladd. Commission
members, Jessica Koory, Joan Graham, Anne Owens and Nadine Yuhasz were in attendance.
Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator. Past Commissioner
Elizabeth Medina attended as a member of the public.
APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Koory to Approve the minutes of the
February 27, 2014 Arts Commission meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by
Commission member Graham and carried unanimously.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however,the Commission
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. There were no comments from the public.
2014-2015 PERFORMING ARTS PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
The Glendale Arts Commission approved $36,000 in support of projects to be funded through
the FY 2014-2015 Annual Performing Arts Partnership Program. Each applicant has requested
$4,000. The Arts Commission has supported performing arts programs since FY 1996-1997 in
order to make the arts more accessible to Glendale citizens, most notably youth and their
families.
The applicants each made a brief presentation about their proposals to the Arts Commission.
After the completion of their presentations,the Arts Commission discussed their selections
offering their comments and observations. The selected projects will be forwarded to City
Council for funding approval at the May 27 evening meeting of the Council. The organizations
selected through this process will have from July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015 to present the selected
projects in Glendale. The Arts Commission recommendations are as follows:
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of ACT ONE for the
2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program. Commissioner Owens voted "Ay".
Commissioners Ladd,Yuhasz,Koory and Graham voted "Nay". The application was
denied 4 to 1.

Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of ARIZONA
THEATRE COMPANY for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program.
Commissioners Ladd,Koory, Graham and Owens voted "Ay". Commissioner Yuhasz
voted "Nay". The application was approved 4 to 1.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of BALLET
ARIZONA for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program. The MOTION was
approved and carried unanimously.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of CENTER DANCE
ENSEMBLE for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program. The MOTION was
approved and carried unanimously.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of CHILDSPLAY for
the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program. The MOTION was approved and
carried unanimously.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of FREE ARTS FOR
ABUSED CHILDREN OF ARIZONA for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership
Program. The MOTION was approved and carried unanimously.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of MILL AVE
CHAMBER PLAYERS for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program. The
MOTION was approved and carried unanimously.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of PHOENIX
CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program.
The MOTION was approved and carried unanimously.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of THE PHOENIX
SYMPHONY for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program. The MOTION was
approved and carried unanimously.
Chairperson Ladd asked for a vote to RECOMMEND APPROVAL of SCOTTSDALE
CULTURAL COUNCIL for the 2014-2015 Performing Arts Partnership Program.
Commissioners Ladd, Graham,Yuhasz and Owens voted "Ay". Commissioner Koory
voted "Nay". The motion passed 4 to 1.
STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE
Gallery Glendale/Exhibits
Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, said she was happy to announce that the Gallery
Glendale at Westgate agreement will be extended 1 year starting June 1, 2014.
She noted that Arbitrary Arts will be featured during the months of May to July at Gallery
Glendale at Westgate, bringing art exhibits, interactive hands-on activities and free creative arts

classes open to the public. Arbitrary Arts will also feature performing artists, musicians, live
painting and collections of one-of-a-kind artworks and crafts to view and purchase.
IN FLUX Cycle 4
IN FLUX Cycle 4 art installations are currently on public display. The installations were created
by competitively-selected artists Shari Keith, at Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center, and
Jayme Blue, at Gallery Glendale.
Summer Arts Camp
The Summer Arts Camp gets underway with the first classes starting on June 2nd. The Public Art
Program offers exciting and fun art workshops for ages 7-10 and 11-14. The classes will be held
at the Foothills Recreation and Aquatic Center and the Glendale Adult Center. The fee for
Glendale residents is $45 and $55 for non-residents. The workshops are taught by highly
respected and popular valley artists.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
The Commission bid farewell to past Commissioner Elizabeth Medina. She will be greatly
missed. Everyone wished her luck in her new endeavors.
Commissioner Graham commented on her visit to The Gas Light Inn for an art exhibit. She said
the owners really made her feel welcomed and had much praise for the City of Glendale and the
Arts Commission.
Commissioner Owens provided information on her trip to the Arts Congress Event on February
5, 2014. She stated it was very well attended and she met lots of interesting people. She
encouraged others to attend next year's event.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Thursday,May 22, 2014.
ADJOURNMENT
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Koory to ADJOURN the meeting. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Owens and carried unanimously.
As there were no further comments, the meeting was adjourned at 9:02 p.m.
