HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 1/7/2014 CITY OF GLENDALE MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD TUESDAY,JANUARY 7, 2014 THE FRUIT PACKING SHED AT SAHUARO RANCH PARK 9802 N. 59TH AVENUE GLENDALE,ARIZONA 6:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by Chairperson Carol Ladd. Commission members, Jessica Koory, Elizabeth Medina, Anne Owens and Joan Graham were in attendance. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator and Erik Strunk, Executive Director, Parks, Recreation and Library Services APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES The minutes will be approved at the next meeting. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no speakers. INTERACTIVE ART PROJECT AND ARTIST FOR GLENDALE CHOCOLATE AFFAIRE The Commission discussed the interactive arts project to be held at the 2014 Glendale Chocolate Affaire. The artist selection panelists Commissioners Owens and Ladd provided a summary about the selected artist for this project. The project was selected from among 10 submitted proposals. The project"Fluttering Hearts" is a project by artist Saskia Jorda will be presented at the Annual Chocolate Affaire Festival, February 7-9, 2014. Ms. Jorda's installation will feature over 4,000 heart-shaped butterflies made of red felt clustered around the historic trees in downtown Glendale's Murphy Park. The artist will be using the iconic images of the butterfly and the heart to create a new hybrid heart-butterfly species. In addition to experiencing the project, visitors are invited to participate in making the butterflies to give as a gift to a Valentine and to add to the existing installation. GLENDALE ARTS COUNCIL JURIED FINE ARTS EXHIBITION The Arts Commission met to review the Glendale Arts Council's Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition and selected the purchase awards for the Municipal Art Collection. The purchased artworks will be installed in city buildings. The artwork purchase is not to exceed $5,000. The selections are as follows: • Spring Blossoms by Magda Gryparis $550 • Lake in the Desert by Alex Pekala $1,600 • Sonoran Rainbow by Lucy Dickens $2,340 Total $4,490 1 A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Graham to Approve Three Artwork purchases in the amount of $4,490 from the Glendale Arts Council's Annual Juried Fine Arts Exhibition. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Owens and carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE FY 14/15 Performing Arts Partnership Program Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, updated the Commission on the next cycle for the Performing Arts Program. She stated the applications will go online on the website by early February. Commissioner Medina inquired about obtaining verification receipts from the applicants before they make any decisions. Ms. Vahabzadeh said that current year grantees have until the end of the current fiscal year to submit final reporting documents. Commissioner Medina asked if they have had any trouble with misappropriations of funds in the past. Ms. Vahabzadeh replied no. She explained the applicants know that if they do not provide a final report they will not be considered for following years. February Events The Plein Air Painting event will take place during the Glendale Chocolate Affaire. The event is open to any artist who paints using the Plein Air technique in oil, watercolor, acrylic or pastel. The winning entries will become part of Glendale's portable art collection. The 2014 Plein Air Painting Competition will take place on Saturday, February 8, 2014. She added that Bernadette Mills, Executive Director of West Valley Arts Council will be judging the event. Additionally Mayor and Council will be judging an award category called, the Council Choice Award. Arts Congress Event Ms. Vahabzadeh noted that the annual Arts Congress event is approaching. The event will be held on February 5, 2014. Commissioner Owens stated she will consider attending again. STAFF COMMENTS Ms. Vahabzadeh encouraged the Commissioners to view City Council workshops and evening meetings. She explained they contain valuable information regarding current and future plans for Glendale. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Thursday, February 27, 2014. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Koory to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Medina and carried unanimously.
