HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 10/24/2013 CITY OF GLENDALE MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24,2013 MAIN LIBRARY-1sT FLOOR LARGE MEETING ROOM 5959 WEST BROWN STREET GLENDALE,ARIZONA 6:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by Chairperson Carol Ladd. Commission members, Jessica Koory, Elizabeth Medina, Anne Owens and Joan Graham were in attendance. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator. Commissioner Darren Fosdick was absent. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, explained she had made a name revision to the meeting minutes regarding "Glendale Shines"Arts Festival per the presenter's request. This was done with prior approval. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Koory to APPROVE the minutes of the August 15,2013 Arts Commission meeting with the revision as noted. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Graham and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no speakers. INTRODUCTION OF NEW ARTS COMMISSION MEMBER Ms. Joan Graham, representing Cholla District, begins her appointment as the newest member of the Glendale Arts Commission. Commissioner Graham provided a brief background on herself. She said she has been a Cholla resident since 1986, has three children and fifteen grand children. She worked in the school system and retired in 1996. She has a strong Catholic background and enjoys her volunteer work in the Red Cross, Domestic Violence issues and Children at Risk programs to name a few. Everyone welcomed her to the Commission. A PRESENTATION ON COMMUNITY EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS Ms. Marilyn E. from Glendale Citizen Corps provided a presentation on the importance of the whole community approach to emergency preparedness. She displayed many of the items that are needed to build an emergency kit to use when you need to survive on your own after an emergency. This year, Glendale Citizen Corps proposes that the best strategy for"Whole Community Approach to Emergency Preparedness" mission must begin with existing leaders who represent all six City Districts. Glendale Citizen Corps works with countless partners that include federal and regional agencies and volunteer programs. Corp members are trained to work concertedly with first responders 1 and emergency management teams. She said that when disaster strikes, Corp knows what their role is and how to get support where and when it is needed the most. She said it was important for the public to be informed, make a plan, build a kit and get involved. The Commission thanked Ms. E. for a wonderful and informative presentation. IN FLUX CYCLE 4 PROJECT PRESENTATIONS The Arts Commission approved funding in support of IN FLUX Cycle 4, a partnership of eleven Valley cities and organizations working together to bring renewed vitality to each participating city through a series of multidisciplinary temporary art installations in storefronts and within public buildings. IN FLUX offers new perspective on the connections between community organizations, local businesses, artists, and audiences. The two selected artist, Shari Keith and Jayme Blue both presented their project proposals. Shari Keith's project will create an installation for a 2-story brick wall in the main lobby area of the Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center. The installation will consist of 10 separate boards that represent sports and activities at the facility. Commissioner Koory shared her concern regarding the project at Foothills Recreation and Aquatics Center. She said she did not have any objection to the project but thought it was supposed to be in a storefront or someplace visible where people pass by. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, explained the initiative parameters had changed and now it can include storefronts, outdoor spaces and interiors of public buildings. Ms. Vahabzadeh stated the facility had a large membership base of Glendale citizens who typically do not attend art shows. Therefore, this would be combining the arts in a place where people otherwise would not get to enjoy art. Jayme Blue's project will create translucent human figures made of recycled wire and shaved steel using light to illuminate them. The figures will be displayed at the storefront window at Glendale Gallery at Westgate. Commissioner Graham had a question on the translucent figures. Ms. Blue explained the forms will be human abstract figures. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE Interactive Arts @ Signature Event Ms. Vahabzadeh updated the Commission on a meeting she had with Special Events regarding the Interactive temporary art activities coming up for the holiday festivals in Glendale. Artists will be invited to propose projects for three upcoming City events, Glow Block Party, Chocolate Affaire and Folk& Heritage Festival. Ms. Vahabzadeh indictated that Glendale high school and college students will be invited to submit artwork for a contest. The winning artwork will be used in promotional materials for the upcoming 25th Folk and Heritage Festival. The award will be a purchase award. The winning 2 original art will be accessioned into the municipal art collection. The top 50 entries to this contest will go on display during the 2-day festival. Ms. Vahabzadeh noted that all artist proposals coming in for the temporary interactive arts at festivals and also the art contest entries will go before artist selection panels made up of Arts Commissioners and other city department employees involved with the festivals for final selection. Commissioner Medina provided an update on the "Glendale Shines"Arts Festival tentatively scheduled for March 8, 2014. She stated that things were on track and moving forward. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Koory commented on the great show on Glendale Today. She said they were featuring the Glendale Youth Project. She said they were expanding and doing a wonderful job. They were doing exactly what they said they would do with the money received from the Arts Commission through the FY13-14 Performing Arts Partnership Program. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Thursday,November 21, 2013. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Medina to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Koory and carried unanimously.
