CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:06pm.
SWEARING IN OF NEW BOARD MEMBER TERESA COLLETT, NEW VICE
CHAIRPERSON SUSAN SOMMER, AND THE INTRODUCTION OF LIBRARY
ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS
Ms. Kennedy announced and congratulated Ms. Collett on her appointment to the Board. She
congratulated Ms. Susan Sommer as the Vice Chairperson for the Board. Board member Collett
introduced herself to the Board.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES—MAY 8,2013
Chairperson Aborne called for a motion regarding the Minutes of May 8, 2013.
She stated she had two minor corrections.
Vice Chairperson Sommer made a motion to approve minutes as revised from the meeting of
May 8, 2013. Board member Fallucca seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
GLENDALE'S NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH CAMPAIGN
Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, America has recognized September as National
Preparedness Month to remind Americans of the importance to take steps to prepare for
emergencies. The Glendale Citizen Corps presented critical emergency preparedness

information and materials in meeting their "Whole community Approach to Emergency
Preparedness" mission by beginning with existing leaders who represent all six City Districts.
Ms. Regina Herd with the Glendale Citizen Corps made a presentation to the Board beginning
with a video on Youtube.com.
Ms. Herd reviewed past tragedies throughout the country. She reviewed incidents that have
occurred in Glendale alone.
She said Glendale Citizen Corps or GCC began after President Bush began the Citizen Corps.
She reviewed the Mission and the functions of GCC. Ms. Herd suggested everyone to be
informed. She said to get trained before a disaster and learn how you will know there is an
impending event. She suggested a plan is made for the family to execute in the event of a
disaster. She said to build a disaster kit, which is a collection of basic household items. Lastly,
she suggested getting involved and participating in programs and activities to make your family,
home and community safer from risk and threats.
Board member Fallucca said she was familiar with the training as she has been CERT trained.
The Board members thanked Ms. Herd for her time and the presentation.
UPDATE ON WEE READERS @ WESTGATE
Staff updated the board members on the Wee Readers@Westgate story times and the plans for
the continuance of the programs. Ms. Karen Reed explained what types of stories are being read
at Westgate. She displayed a flyer, produced by the City's Marketing Department, which is
being circulated in order to promote the program. She explained there are stories read, songs
sung, and finger rhymes taught to children. Lastly, she brought in Bubbles the Bear, a stuffed
animal, and explained his role regarding Wee Readers@Westgate. Ms. Reed described the room
where the story-times take place at Westgate noting the rugs where the children gather are
printed in English and Spanish, which has been well received.
She said no action was required on this item and was information only. •
The Board members thanked her for her time.
LIBRARY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
The City of Glendale joined the Reciprocal Borrowing Program, in July 2012, which was
coordinated by the Maricopa County Library District. In June of 2013, this program was
reconfigured and renamed the "Library Assistance Program" ("LAP"). Ms. Kennedy reviewed
the reciprocal borrowing and materials assistance program.
She explained the new formula on calculating the monies the libraries would receive and also
said the libraries would be receiving additional monies for materials.

Ms. Kennedy noted that approximately 450 persons signed up for library cards in just one week
in August. She added that free library cards are no longer restricted to only Glendale residents.
Board member Wilson asked if there were more adults or children who signed up for a card. Ms.
Kennedy said it was approximately a 50/50 split.
REVIEW OF THE LIBRARY ADVISORY MISSION STATEMENT, OBLIGATIONS
AND COMMITMENT
The Board members reviewed the Mission Statement as well as the goals for calendar year 2013.
No action required. Chairperson Aborne introduced this item. She distributed a copy of the
Goals of the Board for the members to review. She clarified the calendar runs the actual
calendar year, January through December.
Board member Wilson asked Ms. Kennedy if the libraries kept track of how many hours the
computers were used. Ms. Kennedy said yes. Board member Wilson said some do not realize
all that the libraries have to offer.
Board member Wilson asked if the Board is still working on revenue generating ideas.
Chairperson Aborne said yes,they have only discussed this issue.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE
Ms. Cheryl Kennedy updated the Board members on the following:
Summer Reading Update — Ms. Kennedy noted there was an increase in participants this
summer.
Ms. Kennedy said that the Polaris would now be hosted through Polaris in New York rather than
through Maricopa County. This will begin November 5,2013.
Library Card Sign Up —Ms. Kennedy said September is National Library Card Sign Up Month.
She encouraged everyone to stop by one of Glendale's three libraries and sign up for their free
card.
Upcoming September Events — Ms. Kennedy mentioned the upcoming Teachers' Night Out
Event, which will be taking place Wednesday, September 18, 2013 beginning at 4pm at the
Glendale Adult Center.
LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
The Board shared a few comments on a variety of topics. Board member Collett said she is
happy to be part of the Board. Board member Bolognini said Legomania, held at the University
of Phoenix Stadium, was a lot of fun! Chairperson Aborne said First Things First donated

approximately 300 books and were given to Wee Reader participants. She said she composed a
thank you letter and sent to them.
The Board thanked staff for the lapel pins identifying each board member. Also, Chairperson
Aborne asked that each Board member notify staff or the Chair if anyone is unable to attend a
meeting.
ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Aborne called for a motion to adjourn. Board member Shelly made a motion to
adjourn. Board member Bolognini seconded the motion, which passed with a unanimous vote.
The meeting adjourned at 7:44pm.
The next meeting will be held in the Large Meeting Room at the Main Library on October 9,
2013 at 6:00pm.
