MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION
HELD THURSDAY,JUNE 27,2013

6:00 p.m.
The meeting was called to order at 6:10 p.m. by Chairperson Carol Ladd. Commission
members,Joann Lee, Jessica Koory and Elizabeth Medina were in attendance. Representing city
staff were Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator and Erik Strunk,Executive Director,
Parks, Recreation&Library Services. Commissioners Darren Fosdick and Anne Owens were
absent.
APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Lee to APPROVE the minutes of the
April 25th and May 9th 2013 Arts Commission meetings. The MOTION was SECONDED
by Commission member Medina and carried unanimously.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however,the Commission
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. There were no comments.
A REVIEW OF FY 2012-13 ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE
FY 2013-14 ANNUAL PLAN
Staff made a presentation on the accomplishments of the Public Arts Program over the past year
and presented program opportunities for the upcoming year. Below is the power point
presentation review that was shown and discussed at the meeting. The Commissioners were all
very energized and pleased with the assessment of last year's accomplishments and eager to start
planning for the next fiscal year. Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator,directed the
Commissioners to come prepared with their ideas and suggestions for the next FY plan. The
resulting FY 2013-14 Arts Projects Plan will be discussed and finalized for approval at the next
scheduled meeting.

STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE
Gallery Glendale at Westgate Update
Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator provided information on past and current
scheduled events for Gallery Glendale at Westgate.
Commissioner Lee asked how long into next year will they be able to keep the Gallery open.
Ms. Vahabzadeh said the agreement was for sometime around May 17,2014.
Erik Strunk,Executive Director, Parks,Recreation&Library Services, stated the response to the
project has been overwhelming and seems to be working very well. He noted with the
confidence and hard work of everyone involved,this project has been a success.
Commissioner Koory inquired if there have been any concerns with children around the art. Ms.
Vahabzadeh replied no and added each exhibiting organization was aware of the situation. She
added that as part of the exhibit agreement, organizations assume full responsibility for their art
and insurance for the duration of their exhibit.
Chairperson Ladd wondered about the gallery lease being renewed. She said it will seem odd if
the lease is not renewed since the gallery has received great response and continues gaining
momentum. Mr. Strunk agreed and hopes they can continue to build on this project and the
surrounding merchants would want to keep it going. Chairperson Ladd hopes Westgate would
want to keep it too. Mr. Strunk stated these were all issues the Commission needs to discuss
regarding the Westgate project moving forward in the future.
Mr. Strunk thanked the Commission for all their work this year. He said this Commission has
been very engaged in the direction of the goals that were set. He appreciated their faith in staff

as well as their input. He also expressed his gratitude to Ms. Vahabzadeh for her hard work and
commitment.
Bus Tour
Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator provided information on the In Flux Bus Tour
held June 22,2013. She said she had a great time and got a chance to see temporary installations
in seven Valley cities. There were games and prizes on the bus along with a great lunch. The
tour ended in Scottsdale. There were about 140 people who took participated in the bus tours to
view 16 In Flux art installations in 7 Valley cities.
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Koory to Vacate the July and August
Arts Commission meetings. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member
Medina and carried unanimously.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Koory gave high praise to Ms. Vahabzadeh for all her hard work this past year.
She noted that all her work and long hours have not gone unnoticed by the Commissioners and
was evident by all they had accomplished this year. She also gave a special thanks to Mr. Strunk
for all his support.
The Commissioners commented on possibly moving the start time for the Arts Commission
meetings from 6:00pm to 6:30 pm to accommodate Commissioner Fosdick's time constraints
related to work,however,they held off discussing it until he was present.
Ms. Vahabzadeh stated she will keep the Commissioners informed throughout the summer break
and will let them know if anything comes up needing their attention.

The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held September 15, 2013
ADJOURNMENT
As there were no further comments,the meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
