HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 4/25/2013 CITY OF GLENDALE MINUTES OF THE ARTS COMMISSION REGULAR MEETING HELD THURSDAY,APRIL 25,2013 GLENDALE CITY HALL-B2 MEETING ROOM 5850 WEST GLENDALE AVENUE GLENDALE,ARIZONA 6:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 6:05 p.m. by Chairperson Carol Ladd. Commission members,Joann Lee,Jessica Koory, Elizabeth Medina and Anne Owens were in attendance. Commissioner Darren Fosdick arrived at 6:12 pm. Representing city staff was Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator. Commissioner Kaitlyn MacKay was absent. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Lee to APPROVE the minutes of the March 28,2013 with the following corrections: Commissioner Koory clarified that she was inquiring about the Influx artist when asking if they had seen the space. She also clarified that it was noted that Westgate security will only take care of outside the gallery space not inside. Additionally,she believed further clarification was needed when addressing the hours and days the Art Camp will take place. The Art Camp will have 5 workshops,4- days a week for 4-hours a day. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Koory and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public;however,the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no comments. 2013-2014 Performing Arts Partnership Program Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator, introduced the Performing Arts_applicants which provided their brief presentations to the Commissioners. Each applicant was granted a total of 10 minutes for their presentation. The City Council approved creating this program in order to make the arts more accessible to Glendale citizens,most notably youth and their families. The Arts Commission will meet again on May 9,2013 to make selections and recommend the selected projects to City Council for funding approval. The organizations selected through this process will have from July 1, 2013 to June 30,2014 to present their projects in Glendale. Ms. Vahabzadeh explained that Scottsdale Cultural Council application had perhaps been misplaced in the mailing system. She said it was up to the Commission to consider the late application. The applicant has since faxed all pertinent information to her and they are awaiting their decision. Invitations will go out to arts organizations and artist co-ops who have an interest in having a show there. Staff is still working out the logistics. Summer Camp Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, provided an update. Since their last meeting, there have been some significant developments. She explained that because of staffing issues, it has been decided to move the Summer Arts Camp program to Desert Mirage Elementary School. There will be two separate 2-hour classes a day for a total of 10, 4 days a week workshops; one class for ages 6 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. The fee will be $45.00 for Glendale residents and $55.00 for non-Glendale residents. Commissioner Koory asked if Parks and Recreation will still have their events at Westgate. Ms. Vahabzadeh stated there will be no Summer Art Camp at Westgate. However, Parks and Recreation staff is developing an activity event calendar for Westgate. Commissioner Koory commented on the issue of having the artwork and kids in the same building. Ms. Vahabzadeh stated the attorney's office is working on a contract which should cover that issue as well as others. The organizations will be provided with the contract as soon as it's completed. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS 2 Commissioner Koory encouraged everyone to go see the artwork by the Sky Train. She said it was truly amazing. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held on Thursday,May 9, 2013, 6:00 p.m., second floor Boardroom,Main Library, 5959 W. Brown Street, Glendale, AZ 85302. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Koory to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Lee and carried unanimously.
