CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at approximately 6:33 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Commissioners Present: Chairperson Sherwood (Sahuaro), Commissioner Petrone (Cholla),
Commissioner Larson(Mayoral), and Commissioner Penilla(Barrel).
Commissioner Absent: Commissioner Williams (Ocotillo).
City Staff Present: Tabitha Perry, Assistant Planning Director, Jon M. Froke, AICP, Planning
Director, Deborah Robberson, Deputy City Attorney, Brian Friedman, Executive Director,
Community and Economic Development Department, Jessi Pederson, Economic Development,
and Diana Figueroa, Recording Secretary.
ITEM
1. Proposition 457
Mr. Brian Friedman, Executive Director, Community and Economic Development,
provided information to the Commission explaining the potential city services which
could be eliminated if the temporary sales tax is repealed.
Commissioner Penilla questioned how many police and fire positions would be
eliminated. Mr. Friedman said approximately 100. He added the Police and Fire
Departments make up 65% of the general fund.
Commissioner Larson asked where the city of Glendale falls in comparison to nearby
cities regarding the percentage of tax charged. Mr. Friedman said there are a couple of
cities that are higher taxes, but Glendale is one of the highest.
Commissioner Larson said Glendale has some great events which benefit the citizens, but
question where the cutbacks should be made. He asked if the city should postpone these
great events.
Chairperson Sherwood explained the festivals do not make a profit. He said the purpose
is to draw people in and expose them to the downtown area.
Commissioner Petrone said people throughout the valley attend events in Glendale. He
said removal of these events would be detrimental to more than just Glendale residents

but to all of those coming in from different cities and states to attend these wonderful
events.
Mr. Friedman thanked the Commission for their time.
OTHER BUSINESS
Chairperson Sherwood called for other business. There was none.
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at approximately 6:48 p.m.
