I. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at approximately 4:00 p.m.
II. ROLL CALL
Commissioners Present:

The minutes of the September 22, 2011 meeting were approved as written.

1. 2012 RUTH BYRNE HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD
The Historic Preservation Commission reviewed the nomination process and criteria for
the upcoming 2012 Ruth Byrne Historic Preservation Award.

The year 2012 marks the 17th year that the award will be presented. This prestigious
award recognizes outstanding contributions made by individuals or organizations for
historic preservation activities in Glendale. Requests for nominations were distributed
throughout the city in December of 2011. Nominations are to be returned to Jon M.
Froke, AICP, Historic Preservation Officer no later than March 1, 2012.
The Historic Preservation Commission will evaluate the nominations at that time and
select the award recipient. The award will be presented at a Council Evening meeting
sometime in May,to coincide with National Historic Preservation Month.
2. MYRTLE AVENUE CULTURAL GATEWAY
Staff provided an update on the status of the Myrtle Avenue Cultural Gateway
Restoration Project located at 6040 West Myrtle Avenue. The project went out to bid
in 2011. The contractor selected as the most qualified bidder withdrew their bid before
the start of construction.
The project is now out to bid again, and the National Park Service approved an
extension of the Save America's Treasures Grant. The end date for this grant has been
extended from May 31, 2012 to December 31, 2012. Construction should begin the
second quarter of 2012 with completion by the fourth quarter of 2012.
3. GLENDALE GARDENS AND SAGE ACRES HISTORIC DISTRICTS
Two new historic districts were approved by the Historic Site Review Committee on
November 18, 2011.
Glendale Gardens located south of the southeast corner of 51St Avenue and
Orangewood Avenue consists of 32 single-family ranch style homes constructed
between 1957 and 1958. Sage Acres located at the northeast corner of Bethany Home
Road and 48th Avenue consists of 14 lots that were developed with 13 quad-plex
buildings and one six-plex building.
4. PROPOSED 2012 HISTORIC PRESERVATION WORK PROGRAM
Staff presented the proposed 2012 Historic Preservation Work Program for
consideration and adoption. The Commission voted to adopt the 2012 Historic
Preservation Work Program.
VIII. STAFF REPORT
Jon Froke, Historic Preservation Officer recognized Chairperson Shady, and Vice-Chair
Grose, for their four years of dedicated service to the Glendale Historic Preservation
Commission. Both Chairperson Shady and Vice-Chair Grose served as members of the
Historic Preservation Commission from April 2008 to April 2010.
Ms. Shady has chaired the Commission since April of 2010. Her term will expire on
April 13, 2012. Mr. Grose has served as Vice-Chair since April 2010. His term will also
expire on April 13, 2012.
