APPROVAL OF MINUTES— February 16, 2012 • There was a correction noted before approving the minutes from the meeting held in February. It was noted that on page two of the minutes where Ms. Garay-Meyers suggested partnering with Camelback Ranch, that a change should be made to indicate the correct location for partnering as Sahuaro Ranch. Ms. Donley requested a motion to approve the minutes from the meeting held on February 16, 2012. A motion to approve the minutes was made by Ms. Sharp. The motion, seconded by Mr. Wixon passed unanimously. VELMA TEAGUE LIBRARY STATISTICS Ms. Holstine, Library Manager at Velma Teague passed out a handout explaining why Velma Teague's clientele are different than that of the other libraries'. • Many Hispanic users at this library do not have computers at home, and have no culture of checking out books. • The statistics noted Velma Teague's computer usage is heavier than the Foothills Library, despite fewer operating hours. • There are many teens without library cards who receive a one day pass to use the Teen Zone computers. This allows them to complete their homework using a computer which in some cases is a school necessity. 1 • Parking during the City's Mega Events limits access to this library and creates a huge increase. in restroom use at this facility. One benefit noted at an event such as the Chocolate Affair is that books relating to the event can be set aside, well ahead of time for patrons who attend the special event and have an interest in reading more about this subject. Ms. Drake who volunteers for the math tutoring program on Thursday night at Velma Teague expressed concern with inconvenient hours during the heat of the day in the summer-time. This has a high impact on patrons who walk, ride their bikes or use the bus to get to the library. Ms. Garay-Myers and Ms. Drake are brainstorming and networking to take advantage of the downtown location of the Velma Teague Library. Ms. Drake spoke regarding home school library use, in addition to field trips and lunches at downtown Glendale businesses. She was also interested in learning more about job opportunities for youth, ages 13 and up. INTRODUCTION TO LIBRARY EBOOK LITERACY Ms. Jacobson, Digital Librarian at the Main Library did a power-point presentation on an Introduction to Library eBook Literacy and discussed the following: • The electronic way of reading library books has changed so much that Ms. Jacobson has updated the Library eBook Literacy procedure three times since last August. • Our Glendale libraries offer introduction classes to eBook readers. These classes include how to download a library eBook. • The procedures are available on the library web site and as printed copies in the library. • The library also provides tutoring and basic help with eBook borrowing procedures available at the reference desk. Email questions are answered by an eBook team at librarybooksCcgdendaleaz.com. • There is also individual tutoring available by appointment with the Digital Librarian. • Ms. Jacobson provided a comparison of the Kindle Touch and Nook Touch, highlighting the advantages of each. • She reviewed Library borrowing compatibility and vendor bookstore selection. She also discussed the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet LCD Tablet Reader. • She reviewed such things as the screen size and navigation, connectivity, supported file formats, memory and price. • Other topics discussed were Library borrowing compatibility and vendor bookstore selection. • Ms. Jacobson spoke in some detail regarding the Apple iPad, covering the same items listed above, and including how to download a library eBook. • Ms. Jacobson referenced Glendale websites and borrowing procedures for the Kindle, Nook and Apple iPad. • She talked about constraints on library eBooks and how publishers are handling all the new possibilities relating to electronic information. • The bottom line seems to be researching what electronic device you're interested in buying by doing comparison shopping at the vendor's websites. Ms. Sharp was curious about the circulation life of a hard back library book, verses that of an eBook. Ms. Jacobson's presentation was very well done and appreciated. 2 LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE • Ms. Kennedy talked about the Digital Bookmobile having 200 visitors at the Main Library and 100 visitors at the Foothills Library. The Digital Bookmobile was too large to setup and maneuver at Velma Teague, however the hope is to try to setup at the Velma Teague Library the next time the Digital Bookmobile is in the Glendale area. • Ms. Garay Myers asked about what it meant in the budget workshop documents regarding putting the libraries in a store front. Ms. Kennedy elaborated on what a store front library offers. This kind of library would feature best sellers story time, minimal library staff and would be located in a strip-mall. This can be a good partnership venture with the mall and library. The City of Mesa does this now and it appears that the traffic coming to the mall for the library frequents other shops there too. The same is true for shoppers coming to the library and making purchases at the mall. • Ms. Drake spoke about new ways to increase book circulation. Her idea was to have school children decorate book boxes and place them in strategic locations with books inside. The idea is for someone to take a book from the box and leave one in its place. She also spoke about Innovative Programs, i.e. Math with Misty. Her husband volunteers to tutor numerous levels of English, based on his Master's Degree. These types of programs show how we can utilize volunteers when we are losing staff. • With regard to Ms. Frederickson's Marketing Alert, a question was raised as to who is going to read it and where? Another suggestion would be the need for pictures and articles. Ms. Garay Myers mentioned poster software to use in highlighting the mayor and council in READ posters, much like the celebrities do that can be purchased for libraries. There is poster software available that Ms. Kennedy will follow-up on with regard to the cost to obtain the software. • Ms. Kennedy discussed the upcoming National Library Week, April 8th through the 14th. The letter inviting the Mayor and council to participate in National Library Week was signed by the board members. LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS • Ms. Bolognini is concerned for our libraries. She urged board members and others to write letters to our council members. She also feels it is helpful for us to attend council meetings, whenever possible. • Ms. Sharp had various Library articles available that she wanted to share with our group. She also commented on the great job Ms. Burr had done when she presented at the Budget Meetings. • Mr. Wixon voiced his concern on how much revenue is needed to continue operating the libraries. He also questioned what programs will need to be cut if the operating budget is not available. Ms. Kennedy mentioned a $10 fee for library cards for Glendale residents, in addition to collecting outstanding library fines. Ms. Sharp mentioned paying $1.00 per month in order to more easily manage the new fee. Ms. Aborne mentioned that not everyone gets a water bill, i.e., Homeowner's Associations. • Ms. Burr withdrew her comment from the February 16, 2012 meeting regarding a library breakfast event to be held during Library week. Her original idea was to invite Mayor Scruggs and City Council to a breakfast sometime during this week. Ms. Burr also made a suggestion about a bucket of cookies from Trader Joes that would make a great gift to present to our council members. Sandra firmly believes in asking for money to help the library, but doesn't agree with having all library patrons pay to buy a library card. • Other ideas that Ms. Burr had and were presented at the last council meeting were: (1) charge for meeting rooms; (2) seek corporate sponsorship of a book collection donated 3 L by a company, i.e. Discount Tire, in honor of their employees; (3) raise fines to 25 cents; (4) buy new movies and charge people $1 a day to check them out; (5) have a public book sale on the lawn at the Main Library (6) charge people $10 to have a table and sell their books, and then the library gets a percentage of their sales; (7) eliminate the gift bags Marketing gives out, and don't have as many days for Glendale Glitters; (8) allow people to be Library Angels and donate to the library to keep it open, they don't get any perks, they just keep it open for everyone. • Ms. Kennedy mentioned that four of our Library Advisory Board Member's terms will be ending as follows: Sandra Burr, Ken Wixon, Camille Donley and Marlowe Garay-Myers. She thanked Ms. Burr, Ms. Donley, Ms. Garay-Myers and Mr. Wixon for their dedication to serving on the Library Advisory Board and their unending support of the Glendale Public Libraries. She mentioned that a selection of new board members will be made and those individuals will need to be sworn in. • Ms. Donley discussed the television coverage associated with Mayor Scruggs State of the City presentation today. • Ms. Kennedy would like to resurrect the Friends Group to provide programming money and other fundraising strategies. ADJOURNMENT Ms. Sharp made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:45 p.m. The motion seconded by Ms. Garay-Myers and Ms. Burr, the motion passed unanimously. 4
