HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 2/23/2012 CITY OF GLENDALE,ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD THURSDAY,FEBRUARY 23, 2012 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERNCE ROOM—SECOND FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET GLENDALE,ARIZONA 6:00 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m.by Chairperson Diane Lesser. Commission members,Joann Lee, Carol Ladd,Jessica Koory, and Janine Barbour were in attendance. Commissioner Elizabeth Medina arrived at 6:50pm. Commissioner Dagostino was not present. Representing city staff were, Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator and Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator. Guests in attendance were Patrick Hourihan, artist, and Erik Strunk, Executive Director,Parks, Recreation&Library Services. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to APPROVE the minutes of the January 18, 2012 meeting with a correction to her statement changing the wording from"displeasure" to "concern." The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Ladd and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however,the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. No public comments were made. GLENDALE FIRE DEPARTMENT CENTENNIAL ART PROJECT Mr. Patrick Hourihan, artist,provided a presentation on his completed artwork for the design and fabrication of the public artwork in commemoration of the City of Glendale Fire Department Centennial. This action was initiated at the October 19, 2011 Arts Commission meeting where the Commission approved funding for the design and fabrication of this project. The Glendale Fire Depth tment will be celebrating its 100-year anniversary on June 13,2012. In honor of this occasion,Mr. Hourihan. a Glendale Fire Fighter, born and raised in Glendale has designed and created artwork approved by the Fire Centennial Celebration Committee. Mr. Hourihan explained his process of incorporating the old with the new to commemorate Glendale heritage and traditions. He stated the response to this initiative had been overwhelming. He thanked the Arts Commission for all their support and funding which helped make this project possible. The three-dimensional pieces are to be installed at all Glendale Fire Facilities. Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator,thanked Mr. Hourihan for his outstanding work on this item. The response to the artwork has been very positive and believes it will be a wonderful addition to the city. 1 The Commission members were all very pleased with the outcome and presentation of the project. SUMMER ART CAMP Judy Fleming,Public Arts Coordinator,presented detailed information regarding the summer camp workshops. In the adopted FY 2011-2012 Arts Plan,the Public Art Program proposed expanding the program to add 6 more workshops to be offered in partnership with Parks& Recreation for summer 2012. This action was initiated at the September 21, 2011 Arts Commission meeting where the Commission approved funding for the workshops for the Summer Camp for 2012. Ms. Fleming stated that to date,they had 16 different classes scheduled beginning with week 1 from June 18 through week 4 to July 19, 2012. She was very pleased with the diversity of the classes as well as the instructors this year. She noted payment will be online through the Park and Recreations Depaitnuent. PRESENTATION OF RECENT ARTS PROJECTS Staff provided a slide presentation on the recently completed Sahuaro Ranch Park Entry Monuments Projects and the February 4th Plein Air Painting Event winners. The Commissioners were all very pleased with the completed project at the Sahuaro Ranch, as well as with the success of the Plein Air Event this year. Ms. Vahabzadeh commented that an artist, Candy Barr, participating at the Plein Air Event, painted the portrait of fallen Officer Bradley Jones and will be donating it to the family. The portrait will be presented by the Police Chief on February 29th at 1:00pm at the lobby of the Police Department. She said the Commissioners were welcomed to attend the presentation. PRESENTATION ON WESTAF NATIONAL PUBLIC ART ARCHIVES Staff presented information on this item. Mojgan Vahabzadeh and Judy Fleming explained that the Western States Arts Federation was a regional non-profit arts service organization dedicated to the creative advancement and preservation of the arts. The Public Art Archives is a new sophisticated searchable database project of public art in the United States. The Glendale Arts Commission is proud to be part of this innovative service. Currently, there are 10 Glendale public art selections included in the database. The goal is to have all pieces of Public Art on this database with Glendale's own front page for easy public access. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, stated this was a very exciting project for the Arts Department to feature Glendale's municipal art collection. JAZZ AND BLUES FESTIVAL UPDATE Judy Fleming,Public Arts Coordinator stated they were pleased to announce a new temporary public art opportunity for an accredited Arizona college art educator or art educator team to produce event-based interactive art experiences for the Jazz and Blues Festival held at Murphy Park and the Civic Center Plaza. The application deadline is Monday,March 5, 2012 @ 5:00 p.m. The budget for this item is $6,000 for one art educator or art educator team and up to $500 per participating art student. The maximum total available for students is $6,000. 2 Commissioner Barbour expressed her concern of only opening this up to college art educators and students, since the semester is already underway. She hopes we receive enough qualified applicants. Ms. Vahabzadeh explained this was something new the city was attempting and was very excited for the innovative possibilities this could bring forth. Ms. Fleming asked for volunteers for the Jazz and Blues panel. Commissioners Lesser, Koory,Medina and Barbour all volunteered to be on the panel. Mojgan Vahabzadeh,Public Arts Coordinator made a request to have Commissioners meet.on March 6, 2012 to review applications for the interactive arts segment of the upcoming Jazz and Blues Festival in April,2012. The meeting is set for 5 p.m., Tuesday,March 6 in the Board Room of the Main Library. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE Erik Strunk, Executive Director, Parks,Recreation &Library Services,provided a summary of the budget process currently underway with the City Council. He explained that the current discussions were informational in nature—focusing on the services provided by each department and that actual department budgets will be presented in the March time frame. He encouraged the Commission members to become informed; they could access the cost of service budget review documents online and also provide any feedback or comments. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Barbour remarked on an art opportunity for the Arts Commission to commission an art sign for the entryway of the Foothills Aquatic Center since currently there was none to indicate the entrance to the facility. Erik Strunk, Executive Director, Parks, Recreation & Library Services, stated the concept to create signage for Foothills Aquatic Center has been addressed with management. ADJOURNMENT The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Thursday, March 22, at 6:00 p.m. at the Boardroom Conference Room, Second Floor, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Lee and carried unanimously.
