HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 8/17/2011 CITY OF GLENDALE, ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 2011 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM SECOND FLOOR 5959 W. BROWN STREET GLENDALE, ARIZONA 4:00pm. The meeting was called to order at 4:07 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission members, M.B. Finnerty, Janine Barbour, Diane Lesser, Paul Dagostino and Carol Ladd were in attendance. Representing city staff were, Cheryl Kennedy, Interim Library & Arts Director, Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator and Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Lesser to APPROVE the minutes of the May 18, 2011 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Dagostino and carried unanimously. NEW APPOINTMENTS/RESIGNATIONS Everyone welcomed Cheryl Kennedy as the new Interim Library & Arts Director. Welcome to the Commission's new Chair, Diane Lesser and Vice Chair, Janine Barbour. Their new appointments will begin at the next Arts Commission meeting being held on September 21, 2011. Commission member Mink resigned during the summer break. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public: however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. No public comments were made. 2010/2011 ACCOMPLISHMENTS & 2011/2012 PUBLIC ART PLAN Staff presented a review and summary of the Public Arts Program for FY 2010/11/12. The programs are for projects at venues within Glendale city limits. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator and Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator reviewed each item and facilitated a discussion on each public arts program's success and progress. Summer Art Camp 2010. The art camp was held at Glendale's Historic Fruit Packing Shed located at Sahuaro Ranch for youth from 6-17 years of age. Teaching artists were Christy Puetz, Will Clipman, Cyndi Coon, Tania Katan and Joe Willie Smith. 2010 was the second year for charging a small registration fee and utilizing online registration. 1 • The Performing Arts Partnership Program. This program brought music, dance and theater performances to schools, libraries and other community organizations. Eleven organizations were funded: Arizona Broadway Theater, Arizona Theater Company, Ballet Arizona, The Bead Museum, Childsplay, Center Dance Ensemble, Free Arts of Arizona, Glendale Community College, Phoenix Symphony, Scottsdale Cultural Council and West Valley Arts Council. The season's highlight was Ballet Arizona's Ballet Under the Stars, a free outdoor performance presented to a standing room only audience. The Glendale Public Safety Memorial. The Memorial was completed and dedicated in January 2011. The commissioned artist was Haiying Wu. The memorial is located at the Glendale Civic Center Plaza. the 15 ton granite and bronze artwork took three years to complete. Sahuaro Ranch Park Entry Monument. Local Artist Laurie Lundquist was awarded the commission for the Sahuaro Ranch Park Entry Monument. The existing entry monument at 59`h Avenue will be replaced and two new entry monuments will be placed at the Ranch's parking lots on 63`d Avenue. Plein Air Painting Event. The second annual Plein Air Painting Event was held in conjunction with the February 2011 Chocolate Affaire. Out of the 50 participates, six received purchase awards. Art purchased from the 2010 and 2011 events are on display at the Glendale Adult Center. Pedestrian and Bike Bridge at 63rd Avenue and the Loop 101. Arizona artist Bob Adams was selected by the Arts Commission through a competitive process to join the design team led by Parsons, an engineering and design firm. Completion and dedication of the Pedestrian and Bike Bridge at 631.d Avenue and the Loop 101 took place on May 21, 2011. 2011 Jazz and Blues Festival. Artists Kristine Kollasch and Stephen Fairfield were commissioned for the 2011 Jan and Blues Festival. Festival attendees. including hundreds of children, worked with Kristine Kollasch's team of volunteers to make tiles for a mosaic mural. The mural, entitled The Enlivened Pathway, was permanently installed in the Murphy Park Amphitheatre. Stephen Fairfield's Colorful Cubic Calliope brought a visual voice to the festival music with lighting that was "played" by participant's movements. Group Exhibitions Group exhibitions featuring local artists held at the Glendale Adult Center include: • Jordre Studio • Art League West • Glendale Union High School District Students • Phoenix Artist Guild • PSA Art Awakenings 2 Sahuaro Ranch Fruit Packipg Shed The Glendale Arts Council's Juried Fine Arts Show in January and the Youth Exhibition in March were held at the Sahuaro Ranch Fruit Packing Shed. Purchase awards were provided to six local artists participating in the Juried Fine Arts Exhibition. Summer Art Camp 2011. This program was presented at Glendale's Historic Fruit Packing Shed located at Sahuaro Ranch for youth from 6-13 years old. There were 10 workshops attended by 156 children. Teaching artists were Christy Puetz, Melinda Bergman, Cyndi Coon, Tania Katan, Richard Johnson, Shari Keith, and Jane Metzger Restoration and Maintenance 2010/11 • The Sun and the Moon—Foothills • Library Teamwork— Gateway Public Safety Building • Seeing Beyond- Elsie McCarthy Sensory Garden • The Irrigators—Main Library • Veteran's Memorial—Main Library • Centennial Ball—Velma Teague Library • Bronzes are cleaned annually Continuing FY 2011/2012 Projects • Summer Art Camp 2011-12 • Performing Arts Partnership Program • Plein Air Painting Event during the Chocolate Affaire • Temporary art to be featured at the Jazz& Blues Festival • Purchase awards from the Glendale Arts Council's Juried Fine Arts • Exhibition Awards for the Glendale Arts Council's Youth • Exhibition Artist groups exhibitions at the Glendale Adult Center • On-going maintenance and restoration of the City's art collection • Establish an art on loan program with educational institutions in Glendale • Will consider other public art projects upon request and evaluation STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE SUMMER ART CAMP Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator presented this item. She stated the Arts Commission Presentation video produced by City of Glendale Cable will be available for viewing. She encouraged everyone to check it out on Glendale's website. PUBLIC ART PROJECT UPDATES Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item. She indicated the Sahuaro Ranch Park Entry Monuments project was on track. The plans have been completed and submitted to the city. This project is scheduled for completion in late October. ADULT CENTER EXHIBIT UPDATES 3 Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item. She stated that PSA Art Awakenings will run from June 6 — July 13, 2011 at the Adult Center. She explained that PSA Art Awakings is a group that works with adults and youth with behavior issues. The participants use art as an empowerment tool. She noted the re-installation of the Sine Building portable artworks was underway and is currently being housed at the Adult Center until the next exhibit. MAINTENANCE UPDATES Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented this item. She noted the Sensory Garden recently had issues with the tile which has recently been repaired and looks great. She explained there was a slight issue at the Paseo Racquet Center with steel rusting onto the tile. They are looking into it. She stated the issue with the irrigators is almost complete with no further issues. OTHER STAFF UPDATES Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Public Arts Coordinator presented this item. She provided details on the 2011 Field trips with the Economic Development staff to Scottsdale and Gilbert to research successful arts programs for future arts initiatives within the City of Glendale's Centerline district. She explained the goal is to incorporate the art element for the Centerline project to bring artists to the district and highlight the downtown shops and restaurants while showcasing artists and their work. She stated they met and toured with the City of Scottsdale's public art program project manager. They discussed the store front properties being turned into art galleries in old Scottsdale. She explained the city had combined live artists creating their artwork and being viewed by the public walking outside the district. She noted having businesses around the area such as restaurants and bars were the key to the success of this project. Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator stated she toured the Scottsdale's School of Arts. The school is a non-profit organization which serves 3000 students annually. It is also a city tourist attraction. The tour in Gilbert featured art programs with an emphasis in photography with classes and exhibitions scheduled. Gilbert is now gearing up to provide services to photographers. The Arts Commission discussed art and artist possibilities for downtown Glendale. All agreed a big factor for the success of the Centerline Project was for businesses to stay open late. Ms. Vahabzadeh noted that Centerline District was one of Council's major objectives. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Farewell to Arts Commission Chair Darrell Criswell and Vice Chair M.B. Finnerty. Chairperson Criswell stated he was sad to leave, however, had met very nice people and had a wonderful time. He asked the Commission to keep things fun and entertaining. ADJOURNMENT. The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at 4 p.m. at the 2"d Floor, Board Conference Room, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona. ADJOURNMENT 4 A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Barbour and carried unanimously.
