I. CALL TO ORDER
The meeting was called to order at approximately 4:00 p.m. Chairperson Shady welcomed
incoming Commissioner Versluis to the Historic Preservation Commission then asked for
roll call.
II. ROLL CALL
Commissioners Present:
Chairperson Shady, Vice Chairperson Grose, Commissioner Versluis, Commissioner
Lenox, Commissioner Worsdell, Commissioner Hirsch, Commissioner Renning.
City Staff:
Jon M. Froke, AICP, Historic Preservation Officer/Planning Director, Deborah Mazoyer,
Assistant Deputy City Manager, Marilyn Clark, Recording Secretary.
III. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Shady called for a motion to approve the Historic Preservation Commission
minutes for the September 23, 2010 meeting. Commissioner Hirsch made the motion to
approve; Vice Chairperson Grose seconded the motion. The minutes were approved as
written.

VII. OTHER BUSINESS
1. 2011 RUTH BYRNE HISTORIC PRESERVATION AWARD
Staff discussed the nomination process for the upcoming 2011 Ruth Byrne Historic
Preservation Award. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by individuals or
organizations for historic preservation activities in Glendale.

A copy of the news release and nomination form were given to the Commission. Fifty-
three requests for nominations were distributed throughout the city on January 6, 2011.
Nominations are to be returned to Jon M. Froke, AICP, Historic Preservation Officer by
March 1, 2011. The Historic Preservation Commission will evaluate the nominations and
select the award recipient. The award will be presented in May, to coincide with National
Historic Preservation Month.
2. EAST CATLIN COURT
The State Historic Preservation Office recently took action to "de list" a single family
home located at 5551 West State Avenue in East Catlin Court. Significant modifications to
the exterior elevations were made by the property owner without city approvals. The
modifications were such that the home is no longer considered worthy of historic
designation. The home is no longer listed on the National Resister. A copy of the official
letter from the State Historic Preservation Office was distributed to the Commission.
3. MYRTLE AVENUE CULTURAL GATEWAY
Staff updated the Commission on the refurbishment of the adobe house and gas station
located at 6040 West Myrtle Avenue. This is an important entrance into Historic
Downtown Glendale. Refurbishing will begin this year with a completion date of
September 30, 2011. Construction plans have been prepared by Motley Design Group and
have been submitted to the National Park Service. Construction should begin in the first
quarter of 2011, with a completion date of September 30, 2011.
VIII. STAFF REPORT
Staff informed the Commissioners that the Historic Preservation Commission will not have
a booth at the 2011 Chocolate Affair in February.
Staff discussed the public relations press release regarding the BCS Championship game
that shared the spotlight with the newly updated Historic Preservation Website. According
to Marketing j Communications, the revamped website was the eighth most viewed web
page for the City of Glendale in 2010.
Staff reported that in November 2010 that the State Historic Sites Review Committee voted
to place the Sands Estates District on the State Register. The nomination has been
forwarded to the Keeper of the National Register for consideration. Staff expects that the
district will be formally listed by the end of the year.
IX. COMMISSION COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
Commissioner Worsdell handed out a newspaper clipping from the January 13, 2011
edition of The Glendale Star that featured an article on the 2011 Ruth Byrne nomination.
