Main Library 5959 W. Brown St. Glendale, AZ 85302 Members Present: Others Present: Ms. Camille Donley, Chair Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library & Arts Director Ms. Sandra Burr Ms. Cynthia Burmeister, Secretary, Main Ms. Bernadette Bolognini Ms. Cathy Johnson, Library Manager, Foothills Ms. Marlowe Myers Ms. Kathy Hamel, Library Manager, Main Ms. Allison Tedford Ms. Cheryl Kennedy, Library Manager, Main Mr. Pascal Tjahjo Mr. Ken Wixon Excused Absence: Ms. Char Sharp CALL TO ORDER Ms. Donley, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Ms. Donley requested a motion to approve the minutes from the meeting held on April 21, 2011. A motion to approve was made by Ms. Tedford. The motion, seconded by Ms. Bolognini passed unanimously. INTRODUCTIONS Ms. Komernicky introduced Ms. Johnson, Ms. Hamel and Ms. Kennedy, library managers presenting "Future of Libraries" and "Social Media Policy". FUTURE OF LIBARIES Libraries are about making information accessible to our citizens. There is a great need for citizens to be guided through the information maze. Ms. Komernicky, Ms. Johnson, Ms. Hamel and Ms. Kennedy presented an overview of the future of public libraries. The presentation included two video clips, "Shift Happens" and"What's Being Done already?" I-tunes University was also mentioned. SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY In fulfilling our mission in serving informational, educational, recreational, and cultural needs of our patrons, the Library staff created a social media policy. Much of the content relates to libraries, books, authors and the book publishing industry as well as to programs, events, photos and/or images or special topics that the Library is discussing. Ms. Hamel provided an update to the Library Advisory Board on our social media policy. Topics of discussion included Twitter, the Book Obsession Blog, Facebook, and Records Retention. Ms. Hamel stated that social media applications assist in marketing library events and programming and also provide tools for patron feedback to library staff. Ms. Komernicky asked the board members to look over the policy. LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE • Downtown Glendale was the location of a Mother's day event that included a booksale. Ms. Holstein, Manager of the Velma Teague Library helped at the Visitor's Center. • The library webpage now includes a cell phone icon that links users through a mobile website. Accessing information via mobile devices is very popular and has received much publicity. • Webpage update includes video takes of patrons and what they feel the library has done for them. • Ms. Komernicky discussed that Scottsdale library will not need to make drastic budget cuts as first was proposed. • Mesa is starting an express library. • Ms. Komernicky presented Ms. Tedford and Mr. Tjahjo plaques for their service on the Library Advisory Board. Ms. Tedford and Mr. Tjahjo have terms ending on May 27, 2011. Ms. Tedford will be serving on the Glendale Parks and Recreation Commission. • Ms Komernicky stated that typically the Library Advisory Board does not meet over the summer months of June, July &August, so that the next meeting would be in September, 15, 2011. • Ms Komernicky followed up on her e-mail stating her retirement and said she was not sure who would be taking her place. LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS • Ms. Myers asked what Ms. Komernicky would like to see with regard to the Library Advisory Board after her retirement. Ms. Komernicky said that advocacy remains important. • Ms. Bolognini talked about the curriculum of the Library Science professional. Ms. Komernicky said that technology is instrumental to the librarian of the future. • Ms. Burr asked about additional Glendale budget cuts. Ms Komernicky stated there was a 5% reduction in general fund operating budget for FY 2011-12. • Ms. Burr inquired about donations. Ms. Komernicky stated that donations are always important to libraries and that Glendale Public Library has always expected donations; however, the Library & Arts Dept and Parks and Recreation are investigating expanding avenues of donating. • Ms. Bolognini stated that there are no longer any librarians at the Glendale Elementary School District. • Mr. Wixon asked about Ms. Komernicky's retirement date. Ms. Komernicky's official date is July 1, 2011. ADJOURNMENT Ms. Donley requested a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ms. Tedford moved that the meeting be adjourned. The motion, seconded by Ms. Myers, passed unanimously.
