HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 4/16/2008 CITY OF GLENDALE,ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING FOR THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY,APRIL 16, 2008 GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY 5959 WEST BROWN STREET, GLENDALE The meeting was called to order at 4:01 p.m. by Chairperson Kathleen Roe. Commission members Enid Spear, M.B. Finnerty, Manuel Burruel and Winifred Kultala were in attendance. Commission members Darrell Criswell and Winona Passmore were absent. Representing city staff were Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator and J. Gibran Villalobos, Collections and Exhibitions Coordinator. Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, was absent. INTRODUCTIONS Chairperson Roe welcomed Ms. Winifred Kultala as the newest member of the Arts Commission. She represents the Sahuaro District. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no public comments. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE the minutes of the March 19, 2008 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Burruel and carried unanimously. ANNUAL ART PROJECTS PLAN Mr. Gulbranson presented this agenda item. He summarized a power point presentation on program accomplishments for fiscal year 2007/08 and proposed projects and programs for 2008/09. It was the consensus of the Commission to do final review and approvals at the May or June meeting. He provided a power point presentation to present the Commission members with an orientation of the grants review process. Notebooks with copies of the applications were distributed to Commissioners for their review. A special meeting to review and make funding recommendations for the grants will be held on May 14, 2008. Final review and approvals by the Commission will be made at the regular meeting in May. Commission recommendations for grants will be reviewed by the City Council in June. 2008/09 Performing Arts Grant Applications are as follows: Commissioner Spear will review: • Arizona Authors Association, So You Want to Write, $2,700 • Arizona Dance Education Organization, Contemporary Dance, $2,175 • Arizona Theatre Company a. Master Class Workshops with Ironwood and Glendale High School, $4,000 b. Artist in Residency with Mountain Ridge High School, $4,000 Chairperson Roe will review: • Ballet Arizona a. Nagaland Exhibition Educational Programming, $4,000 Commissioner Burruel will review: • Center Dance Ensemble,ABC's of Dance, $4,000 • Childsplay,Foothills Library Tour, $3,000 • Deer Valley Unified, Sierra Verde School, Southwest Brass Residency $4,000 • Dysart Unified, Luke Elem. School, Opendance—Dance Around the World $3,270 Commissioner Finnerty will review: • Glendale Elementary School District, Horizon School, The Old West, $4,000 • Glendale Public Library—Foothills Branch a. Route 66 Revisited, $4,000 b. Tales of Childhood, $3,980 • Glendale Public Library—Main Branch a. Can't Stop, Won't Stop: The Elements of Hip Hop, $4,000 b. Watching Movies from a Different Perspective, $2,000 Commissioner Passmore will review: • Peoria Unified School District, Operatunity. $4,000 • The Phoenix Conservatory of Music,Bicentennial Celebrates World Music, $4,000 • The Phoenix Symphony a. Desert Sage Elementary: Classroom Concert Series, (not eligible) $4,000 b. Copperwood Elementary: Classroom Concert Series, $4,000 Commissioner Criswell will review: • Scottsdale Cultural Council,Arizona Wolf Trap, $4,000 • Theater Works a. BookWorks at Glendale Community Center, $4,000 b. BookWorks at Velma Teague Library, $4,000 • West Valley Arts Council a. Cultura Arts Events, Copper Canyon High School $4,000 b. The Big Read, Glendale Public Libraries $4,000 Total requests for 26 projects: $96,625. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE UPCOMING EVENTS AND PROGRAMS—Mr. Rex Gulbranson presented the following items. Tempe Center for the Arts tour, April 19, 2008. Mr. Gulbranson reported that all Commission members will be attending this event. Governor's Arts Award Dinner, April 23, 2008. Mr. Gulbranson reported that all Commission members will also be attending this event. Americans for the Arts Economic Prosperity III study. Mr. Gulbranson reported they were making good progress on this project. He stated the Commissioners and volunteers from the Mayor's Youth Advisory Commission had collected 250 surveys at the Jazz and Blues Festival. Their goal is 1000 surveys, with 653 surveys collected thus far. PUBLIC ART PROJECTS REPORT Mr. Gulbranson provided an update on the Xericape Habitat Garden. He stated everything was on track and a celebration event is planned for May 3, 2008 to commemorate the project. Mr. Gulbranson reported on the Jazz and Blues Festival. He stated the feedback had been outstanding. The event was very well attended and well received. Ms. Keely reported on the Downtown Parking Structure. She said the City Council had approved the contract and public artist Ms. Lynn Basa is working to complete the imagery on the mosaics. Ms. Basa will make a presentation to the Arts Commissioner on May 21, 2008 to view the work in progress. Ms. Keely reported on Fire Station 151. She said the building will be designed to incorporate public artwork that will be installed after the completion of construction. She stated construction on the fire station had not begun. She noted she will continue to update the Commission with any progress. Mr. Gulbranson reported on the 2008 Summer Arts Camp at Sahuaro Ranch. He stated everything was moving forward and that this item had been well received by the community with most of the classes already filled. He reported that the staff is keeping a waiting list to fill cancellations. Ms. Keely reported on the Paseo Racquet Center and Parks project. She said everything was moving along very well and installation was about to begin. She reported on the tile-making workshop held Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Paseo Center. The event was well organized and well attended. ADULT CENTER EXHIBIT UPDATES Mr. Villalobos reported on the Phoenix Art Guild's exhibition, scheduled for March 8 —May 2, 2008 and the Arizona Artists Guild's exhibition for May 3 —June 6, 2008. He encouraged everyone to attend. ART MAINTENANCE UPDATES Mr. Villalobos reported on the lighting for the Western Area Public Safety Complex. He stated the materials had been ordered and installation should begin by the end of the week. He also reported that the repair at the Foothills Recreation Center was completed. Mr. Villalobos provided a slide presentation of artwork installed at the Public Safety Building in downtown area. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Commissioner Finnerty commented on how well the Jazz and Blues Festival was received: it had been a great success. Commissioner Spear commented on the new proposed library card imagery. She stated it was a great idea will benefit both the community and the arts. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously. NEXT MEETING A special meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, to review and make funding recommendations for the 2008-09 Performing Arts Grants. The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Both meetings begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room at Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street in Glendale. Correction: The May 21, 2008 meeting will be held at Bead Room, Glendale Civic Center Annex, 5750 West Glenn Drive.
