HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 8/20/2008 CITY OF GLENDALE, ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING FOR THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY,AUGUST 20, 2008 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM SECOND FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET GLENDALE,ARIZONA The meeting was called to order at 4:03 p.m. by Vice Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission members Enid Spear and Winifred Kultala were in attendance. Commission member Winona Passmore joined the meeting at 4:17 p.m. and Commission member M.B. Finnerty arrived at 4:59 p.m. Commission member Manuel Burruel was absent. Representing city staff were Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator and J. Gibran Villalobos, Collections and Exhibitions Coordinator. Guests in attendance were Ms. Kathleen Roe, former Commission member; Ms. Kriss Carneal, City Council Office; Mr. Jeremy Jones, DWL Architects; Mr. Myk Bates, public artist and Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library Director. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time, the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no public comments. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE the minutes of the June 18, 2008 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Passmore and carried unanimously. WEST BRANCH LIBRARY PUBLIC ART A presentation by DWL Architects on the new branch library planned for West Glendale was presented by Mr. Jeremy Jones. He provided the Commission members with an overview of this new facility planned to be built in the new regional park near 83rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road. Mr. Jones explained that his firm's design theme for the project is "Library in the Park, Park in the Library". The design incorporates nature's designs and colors throughout the building. Mr. Jones discussed opportunities for incorporating public art into the building with the Commission Members. YOUTH PASSAGEWAY PUBLIC ART Ms. Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, introduced Mr. Myk Bates, recommended public artist for the Main Library's Youth Department Passageway Project. She reported that the selection panel had met three times to review applicants, recommend finalists and select a design concept for this project. Mr. Bates concept incorporates images of dinosaurs etched in architectural glass panels installed along the entryway hall to the youth library. His concept incorporates new lighting to make the space more inviting to patrons. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE Mr. Myk Bates as the public artist for the Youth Passageway Public Art Entry Feature as recommended. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Passmore and carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS/UPDATES YEAR IN REVIEW 2007 - 2008 Mr. Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, reported on this item. He stated that the August Glendale Arts and Culture e-newsletter had been devoted to presenting the Commission's annual report for 2007-08. The e-newsletter is posted on the city's website. AMERICANS FOR THE ARTS ECONOMIC PROSPERITY III STUDY Mr. Rex Gulbranson reported on this item. He stated that the audience survey process had been completed. Americans for the Arts will provide a speaker to present the study to the Commission at the November meeting. ARTS AND BUSINESS COUNCIL AWARDS Mr. Rex Gulbranson reported on this item. He stated that the August 20, 2008, awards ceremony was attended by several members of the Commission. PUBLIC ART PROJECTS REPORT Public Safety Memorial Mr. Gulbranson reported on the Public Safety Memorial. He stated that the committee recommended artist Haiying Wu for this project. The artist is working to refine his design concept. The recommended site is located on the plaza between the Bead Museum and the Civic Center Annex. Downtown Parking Structure Ms. Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator, presented a progress report on Ms. Lynn Basa's public art project for the Downtown Parking Structure. The mosaics are currently being fabricated and will be installed in October 2008. Fire Station 151 Ms. Keely reported on the public art project for the downtown Fire Station 151. She stated a panel meeting will be convened for September 12, 2008, to review design concepts. 101/Glendale Avenue Park and Ride Ms. Keely reported on this item. She distributed copies of the request for qualifications for this public art project. She stated that this project presents opportunities for environmentally friendly art concepts. 2008 Summer Art Camp, Sahuaro Ranch Ms. Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, reported on the 2008 Summer Art Camp at Sahuaro Ranch. She said the project had been a tremendous success with attendance of 180 for the six weeks of workshops taught by local artists. Library Card Project Ms. Bergman reported on the library card public art project, which is being promoted to Glendale schools. Commissioner Spear is making presentations at schools to encourage applications. Ms. Bergman stated that she received many inquiries from schools and parents about this project. The deadline for applications is October 7, 2008, and winners will be announced at a ceremony at Main Library's Auditorium on October 22, 2008. ADULT CENTER EXHIBIT/ART MAINTENANCE UPDATES Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Collections and Exhibitions Coordinator, reported on the Art Awakenings Exhibition, currently on display at the Adult Center. He said the exhibit features 60 artworks, nine of which have been sold. He reported that he making improvements to the art inventory, including posting the inventory and images on the city's intranet. He reported on art maintenance issues, including successes in vandalism prevention for the Picture Glendale project. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS The Commission members bid farewell to Ms. Kathleen Roe. Mr. Gulbranson thanked her for her dedication and hard work on behalf of the Commission. He said she will be missed. Ms. Roe stated it had been a pleasure to be on the Commission and she regretted leaving; however, it had become necessary because she relocated to Phoenix. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Kultala to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, September 17, 2008. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room at Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street in Glendale.
