HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 6/18/2008 CITY OF GLENDALE,ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING FOR THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 2008 THE BEAD ROOM GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER ANNEX 5750 WEST GLEN DRIVE, GLENDALE The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chairperson Kathleen Roe. Commission members Darrell Criswell, Enid Spear, M.B. Finnerty, Manuel Burruel and Winifred Kultala were in attendance. Commission member Winona Passmore joined the meeting at 4:20 p.m. Representing city staff were Rex Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, Sandra Keely, Public Art Coordinator and J. Gibran Villalobos, Collections and Exhibitions Coordinator. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. There were no public comments. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Kultala to APPROVE the minutes of the May 21, 2008 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Criswell and carried unanimously. 2007-2008 ANNUAL ART PROJECT PLAN Mr. Gulbranson presented the final review of the new Arts and Culture programs for 2008-09. He requested the Commission members review the plan and provide direction. 2007/08 Public Art Continuing From 2007/08 into 2008/09 • Downtown Parking Structure-Lynn Base, $100,000 remaining to be paid. • Fire Station 151 —Caricoff-DeLaCruz Team, $90,000 • 101/63rd Avenue Bridge/Pathway-Bob Adams, $50,000—On hold • Main Library Youth Department-Artist to be selected, $40,000 • Public Safety Memorial-artist to be selected, $200,000 2008/09 Public Art • Library Cards, $5,000 • Bead Museum Mural, $40,000 • 101/Glendale Avenue Park and Ride, $200,000 • South Downtown Art Feature-Howard Meehan, $200,000. • Courts Building, $200,000 • West Branch Library, $200,000 • Housing, $40,000 • Downtown Special Events, $40,000 • Glendale Centennial 2010, $200,000 • Arizona Centennial 2012, $200,000 2008/09 Arts Programs • Strategic Planning Update 2005 Guidelines for the Arts • Arts Education 2008 Summer Art Camp Tentative—4th Annual Glendale University graduate course 2009 Summer Art Camp • Performing Arts Grants • Arts Marketing New Y2 hour Channel 11 Arts and Culture Show • Art Exhibitions Glendale Adult Center Sahuaro Ranch A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE the 2008/09 ANNUAL ART PROJECTS PLAN. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Finnerty and carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS/UPDATES 2008/09 PERFORMING ARTS GRANTS Mr. Rex Gulbranson reported on the 2008/09 Performing Arts Program. He stated the grants were reviewed by the Arts Commission on May 14, 2000. The City Council approved the Performing Art Grants program on June 10, 2008. PUBLIC ART PROJECTS REPORT Public Safety Memorial Mr. Gulbranson reported on the Public Safety Memorial. Final proposals by the finalist public artists Robert Shure, Haiying Wu and Joe Tyler will be reviewed by the Committee at the next meeting on July 28, 2008. Paseo Racquet Center and Park Ms. Sandra Keely presented a power point on Kristine Kollasch's and Felcie Regnier's Taking Flight, the completed public artwork for Paseo Racquet Center and Park Fire Station 151 Ms. Sandra Keely reported on Fire Station 151. She presented a power point presentation on the proposed designs by Kathi Caricoff and Jerry De La Cruz, as well as refurbishing of the bell, which will be relocated from the old to the new facility. She reported that the project is slated for a 2009 completion date. South Downtown Art Feature Ms. Sandra Keely presented a power point update on the gateway feature project at Grand and 57th Drive, which recently was renamed the Downtown Transit Center. The completion date for this project is in 2010. Downtown Parking Structure Ms. Sandra Keely presented a power point update on Ms. Lynn Basa's design concept for the Downtown Parking Structure Project. The project will feature mosaic medallions, which will be embedded in the parking structure's sidewalk. The completion date for this project is October 15, 2008. Glendale Public Library Youth Department Ms. Melinda Bergman reported on this item. She stated that on May 16, 2008, the selection panel reviewed and recommended finalist artists for the new entryway to Main Library's Youth Department. The two finalists selected were Mary Lucking and Myk Bates. The next meeting will be held on July 25, 2008 to review proposals. 2008 Summer Art Camp, Sahuaro Ranch Ms. Melinda Bergman reported on the 2008 Summer Art Camp at Sahuaro Ranch. She stated that the six weeks of morning and afternoon workshops for youth of all ages were full with 180 students attending. She noted there were long waiting lists for some workshops. Library Card Project Ms. Melinda Bergman reported on the Library Card public cart project. She explained she will be working with local schools on this project to encourage students to submit designs for new library cards. Winners will receive cash awards announced at ceremony at Main Library in the fall. ADULT CENTER EXHIBIT UPDATES Mr. Gibran Villalobos reported that the Art Awakenings exhibition will show from August 2 to October 2, 2008. SUMMER ARTS COMMISSION MEETINGS —JULY, AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER Mr. Gulbranson reported on this item. He stated it will be necessary to vacate the August Art Commission meeting since the speakers for the meeting have cancelled. A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to VACATE the July Arts Commission Meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Criswell and carried unanimously. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Mr. Gulbranson stated he was happy to announce that Commission members Kathleen Roe, Enid Spear, Manuel Burruel and Winifred Kultala had all been reappointed to the Art Commission. Mr. Gulbranson also reported that he had recently been elected to the Executive Committee for Arizona Citizens/Action for the Arts. Commissioner Burruel commented on the development of a Museum for Glendale Community College's art collection. He reported on a recent meeting with College staff on the issue. Commissioner Finnerty asked to be provided with a fact sheet to become better acquainted with the project. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously. NEXT MEETING The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, August 20, 2008. The meeting will begin at 4 p.m. and will be held in the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room at Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street in Glendale.
