SUMMARY MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING FOR THE
ARTS COMMISSION
HELD WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 2008
THE BEAD ROOM
GLENDALE CIVIC CENTER ANNEX
5750 WEST GLEN DRIVE, GLENDALE
The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chairperson Kathleen Roe. Commission
member Darrell Criswell was in attendance. Commission members Enid Spear, Winona
Passmore and Winifred Kultala were absent. Commission members M.B. Finnerty and Manuel
Burruel joined the meeting at 4:20 p.m. Representing city staff were Rex Gulbranson, Arts and
Culture Administrator, Melinda Bergman, Community Arts Coordinator, Sandra Keely, Public
Art Coordinator and J. Gibran Villalobos, Collections and Exhibitions Coordinator.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. There were no public comments.
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to APPROVE the minutes of
the April 16, 2008 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member
Criswell and carried unanimously.
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to APPROVE the minutes of
the May 14, 2008 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member
Burruel and carried unanimously.
GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY YOUTH DEPARTMENT
Ms. Melinda Bergman reported on this item. She stated that on May 16, 2008, a meeting was
held to recommend a selection of public artists for art and design work for the entryway to the
Main Library's Youth Department. She stated that 19 applications were reviewed and two
finalists were chosen. She said the total budget for this project is $40,000. The two finalists are
Ms. Mary Lucking and Mr. Myk Bates. The next meeting will be held on July 25, 2008 with
artists submitting their proposals.
DOWNTOWN PARKING STRUCTURE
Ms. Lynn Basa presented a slide presentation about her design concept for the Downtown
Parking Structure, She presented design images as well as provided material samples for the
artwork.
STAFF REPORTS/UPDATES
2008/09 PERFORMING ARTS GRANTS
Mr. Rex Gulbranson reported on the 2008/09 Performing Arts Program. He stated that the grants
were reviewed by the Arts Commission on May 14, 2008. They are scheduled to be on the City
Council's agenda for the June 10, 2008 evening meeting. He congratulated the Commissioners
on doing an amazing job analyzing and reviewing the applications.
PUBLIC ART PROJECTS REPORT
Public Safety Memorial
Mr. Gulbranson reported on the Public Safety Memorial. He stated at the meeting on May 19,
2008, the two finalists had made their hour-long presentations to the committee. After
discussion, it was decided that both artists will be invited back to present more fully developed
proposals with the committee.
Paseo Racquet Center and Park
Ms. Sandra Keely presented a PowerPoint update on the Paseo Racquet Center and Park. She
said the Public Art Program hosted a pizza party for the Ironwood High School students at the
Paseo site. She explained the project was progressing nicely and should be completed within the
week.
Fire Station 151
Ms. Sandra Keely reported on Fire Station 151. She said they will be breaking ground for the
building on May 28, 2008. Staff will be meeting with Fire Department staff in June to discuss
the public art feature by the Caricoff-De La Cruz team for the building.
2008 Summer Art Camp, Sahuaro Ranch
Ms. Melinda Bergman reported on the 2008 Summer Art Camp at Sahuaro Ranch. She stated
that the summer camp classes were full and there is a waiting list.
ADULT CENTER EXHIBIT UPDATES
Mr. Gibran Villalobos reported on the Arizona Artist Guild's exhibition, scheduled for May 3 -
June 6, 2008.
ART MAINTENANCE UPDATES
Mr. Gibran Villalobos reported on the lighting for the Western Area Public Safety Complex. He
stated the project was complete with only minor lighting adjustments to be made.
Mr. Villalobos provided a slide presentation on artwork completed around the city. He reported
that he had updated the art inventory, which included new artworks from Picture Glendale as
well as the Paseo Racquet Center and Park projects.
Mr. Villalobos stated that the Glendale Pioneer artwork had been relocated to the Adult Center.
Ile added that lighting had been installed for the artwork.
Mr. Villalobos reported on repair work on the art piece"Steady on Steadiness" at Sahuaro Park.
He stated that the artwork had been damaged by children climbing on it.
SUMMER ARTS COMMISSION MEETINGS - JUNE AND JULY
Mr. Gulbranson, Arts and Culture Administrator, reported on this item. He stated that last year
they had vacated the June and July meetings, however, this year they will be unable to do so. He
explained their calendar was full and had agenda items for both months this year.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Burruel reported on Glendale Community College's interest in collaborating with
the city in building a museum for their art collection.
There were no additional comments from Commission members.
ADJOURNMENT
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Burruel to ADJOURN the meeting. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Criswell and carried unanimously.
NEXT MEETING
The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, June 18, 2008. The meeting will begin at 4
• p.m. and will be held in the 21 Floor Board Conference Room at the Glendale Public Library,
5959 West Brown Street in Glendale.
As there were no further comments, the meeting was adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
