MINUTES OF THE SPECIAL MEETING OF THE
ARTS COMMISSION
HELD WEDNESDAY, MAY 14, 2008
GLENDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY

GLENDALE, ARIZONA
The meeting was called to order by Chairperson Kathleen Roe at 4:02 p.m. Commission
members, Manuel Burruel, Darrell Criswell, M.B. Finnerty, Winifred Kultala, Winona Passmore
and Enid Spear were in attendance. Representing city staff was Rex Gulbranson, Arts and
Culture Administrator.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. There were no public comments.
2008-09 PERFORMING ARTS GRANTS
The Arts Commission reviewed the 26 performing arts grant applications received from 18
organizations for projects to take place between July 1, 2008 and June 30, 2009. Commission
members were previously assigned four to five applications to review and evaluate. Each
Commissioner led a discussion on their findings and recommendations. Commissioner Spear
declared a conflict for applications 5a, 5b and 1 lb.
Mr. Gulbranson stated that the application for the Phoenix Symphony—Desert Sage Elementary:
Classroom Concert Series was not eligible, therefore, taken off the list.
Mr. Gulbranson reported on the application review and approvals process.
Following are the Commission's funding recommendations for the 25 eligible applications.

2. Arizona Dance Education Organization, Contemporary Dance, $2,175
3. Arizona Theatre Company
a. Master Class Workshops with Ironwood and Glendale High School, $3,500
b. Artist in Residency with Mountain Ridge High School, $3,500

a. Ballet Under the Stars, $3,500

5. The Bead Museum

A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Passmore to APPROVE funding for 18
organizations for 25 performing arts grant projects for 2008-09 totaling $84,375. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Kultala and carried unanimously.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
Commissioner Spear commented on the new proposed library cards. She stated she and her
fellow Commissioners were extremely excited to start this new project. Mr. Gulbranson
explained that the Annual Art Projects Plan will be coming to a formal vote at the June meeting.

Commissioner Burruel commented on how great the project at the Paseo Racquet Center was
progressing. He said the project has exceeding his expectations. Everyone was very impressed
with the project's development.
Next Meetings
The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, 4 p.m. at The Bead Room,
Glendale Civic Center Annex at 5750 West Glenn Drive in downtown Glendale. Following the
Arts Commission Meeting, there will be an open house for the Downtown Parking Structure
Public Art Project from 5:00p.m. - 6:30 p.m. at the same location.
ADJOURNMENT
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Burruel to ADJOURN the meeting. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Spear and carried unanimously.
As there were no other comments or suggestions, the meeting adjourned at 5:40 p.m.
