Main Library 5959 W. Brown St. Glendale,AZ 85302 Members Present: Others Present: Ms. Camille Donley, Chair Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library&Arts Director Ms. Sandra Burr Ms. Cynthia Burmeister, Secretary, Main Ms. Bernadette Bolognini Ms. Cynthia Wild, Librarian,Foothills Ms.Marlowe Myers Ms. Claudia Leon, Librarian,Main Ms. Char Sharp, Vice Chair Ms. Merideth Jenson-Benjamin, Librarian, Main Ms. Allison Tedford Excused Absence: Mr.Pascal Tjahjo Mr. Ken Wixon CALL TO ORDER Ms. Donley, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Ms. Donley requested a motion to approve the minutes from the meeting held on March 17, 2011. A motion to approve was made by Ms. Sharp. The motion, seconded by Ms. Burr passed unanimously. INTRODUCTIONS & WELCOME TO BOARDMEMBER BOLOGNINI Ms. Komernicky introduced new Library Board member Ms. Bernadette Bolognini, representing the Ocotillo District. Ms. Komernicky also introduced Mr. Erik Strunk, Executive Director of Library/Arts and Parks and Recreation. SUMMER READING PROGRAM Beginning in the summer of 2000, the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Arizona Republic joined with the twelve public libraries in Maricopa County to present "Read Your Way to the Ballpark"!, a summer reading program for children and families. This cooperative effort proved extremely successful for the libraries and sponsors. All three libraries have also offered teen summer reading programming which has been successful. This year's program, entitled "Let's Play Ball", will include a voucher to a Diamondbacks game, collectible ducks and a book upon completion of the program. Ms. Leon, Ms. Wild and Ms. Jenson-Benjamin gave a preview of the summer reading activities taking place at each of the libraries, including a presentation on the teen program entitled "I Can't Survive without Books." The programs run from May 31St through July 30th. Area schools will be promoting the program using marquees and stickers on report cards. Harkins Theatre will be advertising at local theatres valley wide for a four week period. LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE • Ms. Komernicky announced to staff the Employee of the Quarter, Ms. Christie O'Hara, librarian at the Main library. • Ms. Komernicky gave a budget update, mentioning the West Branch library being slated to begin construction sometime in 2016-2017,with an opening date during the 2017-2018 year. • Ms. Komernicky discussed and demonstrated the use of QR codes. • The lighting project has been completed at the Main library. Board members where given a tour in the adult reference area. • Ms. Komernicky shared bookmarks from the Arts Commission being used in conjunction with Earth day. • Ms. Komernicky read the new library vision statement. • Ms. Komernicky stated that the strategic plan is coming together well. LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS • Ms. Sharp will not be able to attend next months meeting. • Ms. Burr discussed the article regarding in the paper regarding Peoria Library using a collection agency. • Ms. Myers discussed her meeting with Councilmember Lieberman. Ms. Myers suggested future topics of discussion to include the future of the library,methods of measuring success, and e-books. ADJOURNMENT Ms. Donley requested a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ms. Tedford moved that the meeting be adjourned. The motion, seconded by Ms. Sharp, passed unanimously.
