HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Citizens Bicycle Advisory Committee - Meeting Date: 3/2/2009 CITY OF GLENDALE CITIZEN BICYCLE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Monday, March 2, 2009 Transportation Planning Conference Room Bank of America Building,Suite 315 5800 West Glenn Drive,Glendale,Arizona 6:30 PM MINUTES CALL TO ORDER Betsy Turner called the meeting to order at 6:38 p.m. Also in attendance: Fred Coury,John Horvath,and City staff—Steve Hancock Members absent: Bill Wilkinson,Norman Crowell,Brad Meeks, Richard Qualls,Gail Hildebrant,Joyce Dickerson, and Mohamed Gaballa Guests:None II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the February 2,2009 meeting were not approved due to lack of a quorum. III. CALL TO THE PUBLIC There were no members of the public wishing to address the Committee. IV. INTRODUCTIONS Members introduced themselves. V. CONTINUANCE OR WITHDRAWAL OF AGENDA ITEMS No agenda items required continuance or withdrawal. VI. REPORTS FROM OTHER COMMITTEES AND ORGANIZATIONS Betsy Turner said it was announced at the Citizen Transportation Oversight Commission meeting that the City of Glendale received an award for the design of the park-and-ride lot at Glendale Avenue and the Loop 101. She said that staff was considering a number of firms for the future audit of the GO Program. She also stated that Transportation staff person Purab Adabala,despite his youth, was a"genius"at tracking and unraveling the intricacies of the GO Program budget. VII. GLENDALE FAMILY BIKE RIDE Steve Hancock displayed a layout of the start and finish of the ride at Sahauro Ranch Park's main soccer field. He noted the changes from last year to improve the flow during registration and the start of the ride. He said that Bashas' Markets would be exchanging t-shirts for used plastic grocery bags but the t-shirts would be provided by Valley Metro and with a generic safety message and no City of Glendale references or logos. Steve also said that there will be police traffic control at the ten arterial streets that intersect with the bike ride routes. John Horvath,Betsy Turner and Fred Coury said that they would be helping out at the ride this year. Steve told them that all volunteers would need to be at Sahuaro Ranch Park at 5:00 am this year so there would be sufficient time to set up the tents and tables and be ready for the first registrants at 7:00 am. John Horvath handed Steve a brochure from the New York City Five Boroughs Ride. John said that only riders under the age of 14 had to have an adult sign a waiver on their behalf— unlike the City of Glendale that required all riders under the age of 18 to have an adult sign a waiver. ALTERNATE MODE ELEMENT OF THE GLENDALE TRANSPORTATION PLAN Steve Hancock displayed a draft map showing the recommended bicycle projects in the alternate modes segment of the Transportation Plan. He also displayed tables listing the projects that removed connectivity barriers on various bike routes,projects that were planned once the connections were improved and project contingent on future street improvements provided by developers as areas are developed. Steve cited an example of a street being widened by a developer with bike lanes added as part of the striping plan. Steve also noted projects in the Glendale planning area west of Luke Air Force Base that would provide two bridges over the future Loop 303 Freeway. X. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS No agenda items were suggested XL OTHER BUSINESS No other business was brought to the attention of the Committee. XII. NEXT MEETING Betsy Turner said the next regular meeting of the Glendale Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committee would be held on Monday,April 6,2009,6:30 p.m., Transportation Planning Conference Room,Bank of America Building, 5800 W.
