HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Citizens Bicycle Advisory Committee - Meeting Date: 1/7/2008 CITY OF GLENDALE CITIZEN BICYCLE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CBAC) Monday, January 7, 2008 Transportation Planning Conference Room Bank of America Building, Suite 315 5800 West Glenn Drive, Glendale, Arizona 6:30 PM MINUTES L CALL TO ORDER Bill Wilkinson called the meeting to order at 6:36 p.m. Also in attendance: Betsy Turner, Brian Kanitsch, Fred Coury,Norm Crowell, Saif Al-Alawi and City staff •—Steve Hancock Members absent: Rick Qualls,Gail Hildebrant,Jeff Reid,Brad Meek Guests: John Horvath II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the December 3, 2007 meeting were approved III. CALL TO THE PUBLIC John Horvath introduced himself as a future appointee to the Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committee. John also brought to the Committee's attention a situation on the Glendale Ave. at the Agua Fria River crossing where trees branches have grown into the bike lanes. IV. INTRODUCTIONS Members introduced themselves. V. CONTINUANCE OR WITHDRAWAL OF AGENDA ITEMS No agenda items required continuance or withdrawal. VI. REPORTS FROM OTHER COMMITTEES AND ORGANIZATIONS Betsy Turner said that the Citizen Transportation Oversight Committee(CTOC)met at the Field Operations Center to tour the Sign Shop and Transit Operation Center. She also told the Committee about the possibility of having a Transit Center at Arrowhead Towne Center with improvements for bicyclists and pedestrians. Brian Kanitsch mentioned that three lights on the Skunk Creek Pathway were out in the vicinity of the Aquatics Center. Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committee Minutes January 7, 2008 —Page 2— VII. 2008 GLENDALE FAMILY BIKE RIDE Steve Hancock said that the date of the ride had been finalized as Sunday, April 13`h after Valley Metro had established the date of the Great Bike Chase(April 20th)as part of the larger Valley Bike Month. Steve said that most of the artwork for the ride has been completed and posters and registration forms will be printed for timely distribution. He said that about 28,000 registrations would be delivered to schools, libraries, bike shops, and riders in previous rides. Steve pointed out that this year's ride will have a"Get Green-Ride a Bike"theme that focuses on things people can do to improve the environment. He said that this year we will have people bring used, plastic grocery bags to exchange for t-shirts instead of just giving them away for free. Steve said that Bashas' Markets agreed to provide a recycling bin for the plastic bags as well as information on their efforts to get customers to use reusable bags. Other environmental participants coming to the ride were listed by Steve—they are: Glendale's Recycling Program, Glendale's Water Conservation Program, the Arizona State Department of Environmental Quality,the U.S. Green Building Council—Arizona Chapter, Dependable Solar Products, and A.K.A. green home construction products. Steve asked Committee members for any suggestions for other environmental friendly entities to attend the ride. Norm Crowell suggested contacting First Solar Panels. Steve asked Committee members to consider volunteering for the ride. VIII. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS No future agenda items were proposed. IX. OTHER BUSINESS Brian Kanitsch said that the ramp from Cholla St.to the south bank of the Arizona Canal, near the Cholla Water Treatment Plant at 47th Ave.,was unsafe, especially when flooded by rain. He thought something should be done to rectify the situation. X. NEXT MEETING Bill Wilkinson said the next regular meeting of the Glendale Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committee would be held on Monday, February 4, 2008, 6:30 p.m., Transportation Planning Conference Room, Bank of America Building, 5800 W.
