He said that Peoria had kicked off the events with their Pioneer Day Bike Ride and outlined some of the other major events leading up to the Great Bike Chase on May 7th . VII. GLENDALE FAMILY BIKE RIDE Steve Hancock went over plans for the April 9th bike ride. He said that all necessary reservations for the two rest stops at Marshall Ranch and Canyon Elementary Schools were in place. He said that the Apollo High School ROTC volunteers would not be manning the Marshall Ranch rest stop because Hal Anders Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committee Minutes April 3,2006 —Page 2— had an illness in the family that required him to be out of town on ride day. He thought that three to four volunteers could handle the first rest stop at Marshall Ranch. The second rest stop would not be problem Steve said, because URS would be providing one person and all of the water and snacks. He asked if anyone would be willing to help at the second rest stop at Canyon Elementary School. Michael Wood said that he be willing to do so. Steve said that Tri-Rentals would be setting up a 20' X 20' canopy with tables and chairs this year at Sahuaro Ranch-news that seemed to be welcomed by Committee members. Steve updated the members on Glendale Police support for the ride, saying that there would be no need for traffic control at every arterial street crossing and that Police Bike Patrol officers would be sufficient for ride purposes. Steve said that the number of pre-registered riders was 368, well above the 235 registered riders in 2005. He said this indicated that this year's ride would probably be much larger than in past years. Steve thought this was due to better media attention and the distribution of over 10,000 registration flyers through Glendale and Peoria elementary schools. Steve also noted that an article on the ride was slated to run in the April 6th Glendale Republic newspaper, three days before the ride. Steve asked if there were any questions or concerns about the ride. None of the members had questions. VIII. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS No future agenda items were suggested. IX. OTHER BUSINESS Mariano Vargas asked if a statewide Safe Routes to School Coordinator(SR2S)had been hired. Steve Hancock said that no one had been hired yet but that the Arizona Department of Transportation had advertised for applicants. Mariano said that he still had concerns about the situation on 75th Ave. near Independence High School where there were few walkways or bikeways for student to get to school. Steve told him that the SR2S programs were almost entirely focused on elementary schools, not high schools. Steve said that he would invite the SR2S Coordinator, when the job was filled,to a future meeting to give the CBAC an overview of the statewide program. X.
