CONTINUANCE OR WITHDRAWAL OF AGENDA ITEMS No agenda items required continuance or withdrawal VI. REPORTS FROM OTHER COMMITTEES AND ORGANIZATIONS Bill Wilkinson said that CTOC approved an $800,000 cost increase for the widening of the Glendale Avenue bridge over New River(for bike and ped facilities). He said the City let the contract last year but the contract expired due to lack of a completed environmental impact study. Bill said that it was hoped that the project would be put out for bids soon. Betsy Turner said that the Greater Arizona Bicycling Association (GABA) was sponsoring a ride called"Around the Tanks," 50 and 70 mile rides around the White Tank Mountains on March 19th. Betsy said that Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committee Minutes February 6,2006 —Page 2— members interested in the ride could find more information on registration on the GABA website http://www.sportsfun.com/gaba/aroundthetanks.html VII. GLENDALE FAMILY BIKE RIDE Steve Hancock passed out copies of the 2006 logo that will be used the ride registration form and the T-shirt. He noted that the artwork on the logo was purchased from Taliah Lempert,a New York artist. He said the City purchased limited rights to 15 of her electronic images. Steve said that the registration forms would soon go to print and be available to those members who wished to distribute them to bike shops, libraries, etc. Steve then passed out copies of the long and short routes for the 2006 ride. He pointed out that the suggested routes had been changed from previous years to include the newly completed bridge on the flood diversion channel just north of Marshall Ranch Elementary School. He said the changes would eliminate the need for barricading 59th Ave. between Sweetwater and Eugie. He also pointed out that the changes would eliminate the need for a third rest stop since the long-route would return via the new bridge and a single rest stop would serve both outbound and inbound long-route riders. Ed Cure and others suggested that the short-route be changed so that riders would exit Sahuaro Ranch Park to the west onto 63`'Ave. and then northbound—in a clockwise movement rather than a counter clockwise movement. Steve concurred that this would be a good idea because it would be less confusing and would decrease the chance that people would end up taking the long-route by mistake. Steve suggested to the Committee that the T-shirts be free this year instead of having riders pay as in past years. He said that previous to the 2003 ride there was no charge for T-shirts,noting that all costs for the ride were covered by the half-cent GO program funds. There was a consensus from the Committee that the T-shirts be provided at no cost to riders. Steve said that more XXL t-shirts would be ordered this in response to the Committee's comments about last year's ride. There was a suggestion that the second rest area for the long-route could be at Desert Rose Park instead of Canyon Elementary School so there would be better spacing between the two rest areas. Steve said he would look into that possibility. VIII. FUTURE AGENDA ITEMS Ed Cure asked that Jamsheed Mehta, the new Transportation Department Director for the City of Glendale, address the committee on his thoughts about bicycling in Glendale. Steve Hancock said that the Glendale Family Bike Ride would be an agenda item in March and April. IX. OTHER BUSINESS Mariano Vargas asked if a Safe Routes to School Coordinator had been hired yet by the Arizona Department of Transportation. Steve said that he would check with Mike Sanders at ADOT. Mariano said that there was a real need for safer route to Independence High School since there were no bike lanes or sidewalks on 75th Ave. between Bethany Home Rd. and Rose Ln. He also cited the situation on Maryland Ave. between 72nd Ave. and 75th Ave. where the roadway is too narrow and there is a small pathway next to the cemetery. Steve pointed out that URS Corporation was doing a feasibility study that would include widening the pathway. c:\documents and settings\blimbach\desktop\minutes\2006\0206m.doc 04/29/11 Citizen Bicycle Advisory Committee Minutes February 6,2006 —Page 3— X.
