VII. 2005 GLENDALE FAMILY BIKE RIDE REVIEW
Steve Hancock used a Power Point presentation to illustrate various aspects of the Glendale family
Bike Ride. Steve noted that the number of riders was down by about 100 compared to last year.
He said that getting the word out about the ride was done in the same manner as last year with
direct mailings to previous participants, flyers at bike shops, libraries and other City facilities.
Steve noted that he did not place ads in Sweat Magazine this year but doubted that would have had
much impact. Steve thought that competing events might have limited attendance, citing the
City's Jazz and Blues Festival and the Run for literacy that occurred at the Main Library next to
Saguaro Ranch Park. Steve asked if the Bike Week Swap Meet on the day before the ride had a
good turn out. Betsy said that the number of vendors was up but the number of people attending
the Swap Meet may have been down. Steve told the committee that helmet sales were down from
last year but t-shirt sales were up. He said only 24 helmets were sold but 311 t-shirts were sold.
Betsy said that people were buying t-shirts for themselves and others who weren't at the ride. Jim
Hunton said that the City used to guarantee t-shirts for those who pre-registered. Steve pointed
out that only 108 of the 235 people pre-registered for the ride showed up. He said that we might
not want to have pre-registration for next year's ride. He said we could send out announcements
about the ride but limit registration to the day of the ride since we already require people to check
in at the registration table anyway. There was a general consensus among Committee members
that this was something we should try next year. Ed Cure asked if we could pass out ride
announcements through the City's elementary schools. Steve said that we could if the Glendale
Elementary School District administrative office approved the content of the flyers. He said that
we would then have to go to each school individually and ask if they would be willing to hand out
the announcements. Jim Hunton suggested that we could tap into the physical education programs
in the schools. Betsy Turner said that we could possibly do a survey on the Internet to ask people
how they would prefer to register for the ride. Jim Hunton suggested we send everyone a postcard
with survey questions. Jeff Reid asked if Glendale Community College might be a good place to
market the ride. Steve asked for suggestions to improve next year's ride. He cited a suggestion by
Sylvia Jaquez to combine the registration and waiver signing at the same table instead of having
two separate tables. Other suggestions were to add a sign on the Paseo at 71St Ave. that would
better indicate the exit onto Greenway, make the markings for the short route more apparent at the
first rest stop, ask the police bike units to mix more with the riders, have a first aide kit at each rest
stop and at Sahuaro Ranch Park, ask City of Glendale paramedics to help on the ride, and make
sure the volunteers at the first rest stop do not leave too early. Bill Wilkinson said we need to
have more large size bike helmets next year. Michael Wood said that a suggestion box at the ride
might be useful. Brian Kanitsch suggested mailing post card surveys to registered riders. Betsy
Turner wondered if we could reserve some of the ramadas at Sahuaro Ranch Park for the start and
finish of the ride instead of using tents.

would invite Ed to the meeting.
