LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
MINUTES

CALL TO ORDER
Ms. Donley, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ms. Donley requested a motion to approve the minutes from the meeting held on February 17, 2011. A
motion to approve was made by Ms. Sharp. The motion, seconded by Ms. Hudson passed unanimously.
LIBRARY COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT
Ms. Johnson and Ms. Lisitzky, both responsible for adult materials collection at the library presented
information about how materials are selected for the library, how materials are weeded from the collection,
how the materials budget is apportioned between the various library divisions, how gifts and memorials are
treated and how patron complaints about materials are handled.
LIBRARY PLANNING PROCESS
The library is currently updating the strategic plan. Ms. Komernicky facilitated a discussion on the strengths,
weaknesses, opportunities and threats of Glendale Libraries, as perceived by board members, to incorporate
into the plan.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE
• Ms. Komernicky announced to staff the appointment of Mr. Erik Strunk as Interim Executive
Director over Library/Arts and Parks and Recreation.
• The Foothills Branch Library will be having their spring booksale on March 25th from 1:00 to 4:00
p.m. and on March 26th from noon to 4:00 p.m.
• This year's Summer Reading Program, Read Your Way to the Ball Park, will be sponsored by the
Arizona Diamondbacks. The teen theme will be"I Can't Survive Without Books".
• Ms. Komernicky stated that Harper Collins will be changing their E-Book policy to require additional
charges for items that circulate after an initial twenty-six times. Area libraries met with the Greater
Phoenix Digital Library where discussion ensued on this matter and a letter is being drafted to Harper
Collins expressing concerns.
• The lighting project at the Main Library continues.
• • Ms. Komernicky presented the patron survey results with regard to electronic devices and social
media preferences.

• Mr. Wixon took a Nook class at Barnes and Noble.
• Ms. Donley suggested members write a thank you letter to the library staff for their continued efforts.
ADJOURNMENT
Ms. Donley requested a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ms. Hudson moved that the meeting be adjourned.
The motion, seconded by Ms.Burr, passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned by Ms. Donley at 8:41
p.m.
