LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING
MINUTES

CALL TO ORDER
Ms.Donley, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Ms. Donley requested a motion to approve the minutes from the meeting held on November 18, 2010. A
motion to approve was made by Ms. Sharp. The motion, seconded by Ms. Hudson, passed unanimously.
TOUR OF FOOTHILLS BRANCH LIBRARY
Ms. Cathy Johnson, Branch Manager, Ms. Karen Reed, Librarian, Ms. Kim Huff provided a tour of the
Foothills Branch Library located at 19055 N 57th Avenue. The tour also included a presentation on early
literacy and branch operations in the adult,youth and circulation areas which also touched on library services
and programming.
LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE
• Thank you to the Library Board members for the cookies they provided to the library page staff in
appreciation for their continued hard work.
• The Employee of the Quarter is Cheryl Kennedy. Ms. Komernicky read the nomination to the board.
• Ms. Komernicky, president of MCLC, discussed her first meeting among metro Library Directors
which included discussion on streamlining business practices and having more opportunities to
address current issues.
• Library staff is working on developing Teen and Adult Facebook pages.
• Library staff will be working on setting up Overdrive stations at both the Main and Foothills libraries.
• Library staff is creating a desert garden gondola/display at the Main library. Children's storytime and
crafts will also focus on a"green"theme.
• January 22nd begins the Arizona Songwriters Gathering with live performances and crafts on
songwriting and other social media topics.
• Thursday, January 27th Live at the Library will feature musician R. Carlos Nakai and Will Clipman.
Nakai is a Native American flutist and Clipman a master percussionist.
• One Book Arizona will be coming soon. The chosen children's book is Code Talkers. The Adult
selection is Hopi Summer.
• Velma Teague kicked off their United Way storytimes. There were over 30 in attendance for each of
the first two sessions.
• Velma Teague is hosting Job Search Labs.
• Ms.Lesa Holstine has scheduled 11 authors for Authors at the Teague.
• The lighting project at the Main library is underway.
• The skylight project and the new air conditioner for the Velma Teague library are tentatively
scheduled for February 2011.
• The wireless services will be updated at all three Glendale libraries.
• Library staff is working with the Mayor's office on using teens from the Mayor's Youth Advisory
Commission as library volunteers. This suggestion came from the Library Advisory Board members.
• Ms. Kristin Fletcher-Spear will appear on Channel 11 today.
• Ms. Komernicky passed on information to the members regarding Glendale University. All three
libraries have information available on the spring session, along with a message being printed on
library receipts.
LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
• Ms. Sharp stated that Southwest network has been contacted and is excited about doing special
programs with the library.
• Ms. Hudson asked about the status of the west branch library. Ms. Komernicky said this issue may
be part of the March budget discussions.
• Ms. Hudson asked if the libraries teach Facebook and Twitter classes. Ms. Komernicky said not at
this time,however the libraries have tutorials on using e-books and also on job searching help.
• Ms. Burr stated that Councilmember Knaack is looking forward to viewing the presentation entitled
"A Day in the Life of the Library." Ms. Myers suggested using YouTube to provide to the public.
Ms. Komernicky agreed, but would need to look into that further.
• Ms. Burr visited the Lafayette Indiana library and brought back library materials to share. She stated
that this library does not charge library fines. Ms. Burr also delivered to them a copy of the Glendale
library's Book Bingo game.
• Ms. Hudson asked about the lighting project. Ms. Komernicky said it's underway with a completion
date sometime in May 2011.
• Ms. Donley asked if the A/C handlers will be replaced at Velma Teague. Ms. Komernicky said yes.
The warm weather months are a concern in getting this project completed early.
• Ms. Donley asked if the Maricopa County Library Consortium has considered the idea of using
universal library cards. Ms. Komernicky said yes.
• Ms. Donley discussed her recent dealings with the Canadian library system.
• Ms. Myers asked if there were any specifics needing to be presented upon meeting with their
individual Council members.
• Ms. Komernicky discussed the budget update at the last council meeting. A budget update had been
given to Mayor and City Council during a recent workshop session. The holiday sales are unknown at
this point. There is also no update on any changes to state shared revenues.
• Ms. Myers asked what impact volunteers have to the budget. Ms. Komernicky said they are a great
help to the library, but the hours they put in don't make up for the losses to staff Ms. Myers asked
about academic credit, to which Ms. Komernicky stated many schools don't offer credit although
some classes offer credit and we do get teen volunteers from schools. The libraries do also have
interns from the University level that receive credit.
• Mr. Wixon asked if Ms. Komernicky and staff were invited to attend the council district meetings.
Ms. Komernicky said yes.
