MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE
ARTS COMMISSION
HELD WEDNESDAY,NOVEMBER 17,2010
LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM,2'D FLOOR
5959 WEST BROWN STREET
4:00pm.
The meeting was called to order at 4:30 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission
members Scott Mink, Janine Barbour, and Paul Dagostino were in attendance. Commissioner
Dagostino arrived at 4:30pm; therefore the Commission had a quorum to begin the meeting.
Representing city staff were Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, Mojgan Vahabzadeh,
Library & Arts Coordinator and Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator. Commissioners
Finnerty and Lesser were absent.
APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to APPROVE the minutes of
the October 20, 2010 meeting with a correction to Commissioner Barbour comment on the
last page to read, "Glendale is the only city in Maricopa County that does not have an Arts
Center". The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Dagostino and carried
unanimously.
PUBLIC COMMENTS
At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission
may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency
exists. No public comments.
PERFORMING ARTS PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
Staff presented information regarding the 2011 — 2012 Performing Arts Partnership Program.
The development of this program is to motivate, increase and support the performing arts in the
City of Glendale. The Arts Commission awards partnership support up to $4,000 for projects in
the fields of theater, dance and music. To be considered for this partnership program, the
applicant must reside in or work in partnership with an organization domiciled within the city
limits of Glendale. Chairperson Criswell asked for a motion
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to APPROVE the 2011 — 2012
Performing Arts Partnership Program with the approved budget of up to $35,000. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Mink and carried unanimously.
ARTS COMMISSION REVIEW OF UPCOMING PUBLIC ART PROJECTS
Staff presented information and requested volunteers to serve on the upcoming Public Arts
Project panels. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library & Arts Coordinator, reviewed the request for two
Arts Commission members to participate in review and artist selection for each of the projects.
She explained that more information will be forthcoming once the meetings are scheduled. The
volunteer panels are as follows:

• Plein Air Painting Event—Commissioners Mink and Lesser
• Sahuaro Ranch Park Entry Monument Project—Commissioners Barbour and Criswell
• Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival—Commissioners Dagostino and Finnerty
Chairperson Criswell asked for a motion.
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to APPROVE the Selected Arts
Commission Panels for the three Public Arts Projects. The MOTION was SECONDED by
Commission member Dagostino and carried unanimously.
DECEMBER,2010 ARTS COMMISSION MEETING
The Arts Commission will consider vacating the December Arts Commission Meeting since the
Commission does not usually meet in December. Chairperson Criswell asked for a motion.
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Dagostino to VACATE the December
2010 Arts Commission Meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member
Mink and carried unanimously.
STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE
PUBLIC ART PROJECT UPDATES:
Public Safety Memorial
Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director provided information on the Public Safety Memorial
project. She stated the dedication is scheduled for the first week in January of 2011. Staff will
be sending out invitations.
Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival
Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, reported on the Annual Jazz & Blues
Festival held at Murphy Park and the Civic Center Plaza. This is an art opportunity for four
artists or artist teams to produce site specific artwork. The city's goal with this temporary public
art project is to bring another dimension to the festival using contemporary artists and their work.
The budget is $4,500 per artist or artist team and must cover all expenses. Ms. Vahabzadeh
stated the call to artists has had a low response, with only one application submitted. However,
staff is planning to extend the deadline to December 10, 2010.
Plein Air Painting Event
Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, presented this item. She stated the Arts
Commission and the Marketing Department will sponsor the 2011 Plein Air Painting Event at the
Glendale Chocolate Affaire. It will be held in downtown Glendale, on Saturday, Feb. 5, 2011.
She indicated press release information has been sent to several organizations. She will continue
to update everyone as information becomes available.
Sahuaro Ranch Park Entry Monument
Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, presented this item. She explained the
Glendale Library and Arts Department, in collaboration with the Glendale Parks and Recreation

Department, seeks to hire an Arizona artist or artist team to design, fabricate and install three
public art entry monuments for Sahuaro Ranch Park. The art budget is all-inclusive and will not
exceed $40,000 for the total project and must cover all expenses. She noted that the call for artists
had been completed. The deadline for receipt of applications is December 20, 2010.
Adult Center Exhibit Updates:
Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, presented information on the Adult Center. The center
will be featuring Art League West starting November 1, 2010. The Glendale Unified High
School District will be featured at the center beginning in February through March 2011, for both
faculty and students.
Maintenance Updates:
Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator, reported that routine maintenance and cleaning of the
Veteran's Memorial was completed before the ceremony on Veteran's Day. She indicated that
all Glendale sculptures had been inspected and were in good shape.
Other Staff Updates
Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, reported on the Veteran's Day Ceremony
celebration. She stated the event was nicely done and well attended.
COMMISSIONER COMMENTS
The Arts Commission wished everyone a safe and happy Holiday Season.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, January 19, 2011,
at 4 p.m. at the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown
Street, Glendale, Arizona.
ADJOURNMENT
A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Barbour to ADJOURN the meeting. The
MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Mink and carried unanimously.
