Main Library 5959 W. Brown St. Glendale,AZ 85302 Members Present: Others Present: Ms. Camille Donley, Chairperson Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library&Arts Director Ms. Sandra Burr Ms. Cynthia Burmeister, Secretary, Glendale Library Ms. Cherie Hudson Ms. Lesa Holstine, Library Manager, Velma Teague Ms. Marlowe Myers Ms. Cathy Johnson, Library Manager, Foothills Ms. Char Sharp Ms. Kathy Hamel, Library Manger,Main Mr. Pascal Tjahjo Ms. Cheryl Kennedy, Library Manager, Main Mr. Kenneth Wixon Ms. Stephanie Rumsey, Librarian 1, Velma Teague Excused Absence: Ms. Katy Bickerstaff Unexcused Absence: Ms.Allison Tedford CALL TO ORDER Ms. Donley, Chairperson, called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. INTRODUCTION OF NEW BOARD MEMBER Ms.Donley introduced Ms.Myers to the meeting attendees. Ms.Myers participated in Glendale University where she was introduced to the opportunity to serve on the Library Advisory Board. APPROVAL OF MINUTES Ms.Donley requested a motion to approve the minutes from the meeting held September 16, 2010. Ms. Burr asked that the minutes be amended to include her suggestion to contact the public schools to recruit library volunteers which will also provide an opportunity for them to complete community service hours. The addition was made to the September 16'2010 minutes. A motion to approve as amended was made by Ms. Sharp. The motion, seconded by Mr. Wixon, passed unanimously. A DAY IN THE LIFE OF PUBLIC LIBRARY STAFF Library Managers, Ms. Holstein, Ms. Hamel, Ms. Kennedy and Ms. Johnson presented to the Library Advisory Board a day in the life of public service staff which included a PowerPoint presentation of the many duties completed in the circulation, youth and reference areas. LIBRARY DIRECTOR UPDATE • Ms. Komernicky read the nomination for Terry Oxley, October's Employee of the Month. • Ms. Komernicky distributed the Open Meeting Law Memorandum. • The Community Services Group, of which the library is a part, will be having a fundraiser entitled "Fall Into Savings". This is an appreciation event offering discounts on sports, travel, car care restaurants, spas and other family attractions at great savings! • The Foothills Branch Library will be having a book sale on October 29th and 30tH • Ms. Komernicky discussed the grant received for job searching open labs. • Ms. Komernicky stated that Ms. Kathy Pastores, Librarian 3, has promoted to a Librarian 4 position moving from the Foothills location to the Main Library and will oversee the Main Library's Youth Department. • Ms. Komernicky along with Councilmember Knaack appeared on Channel 11, doing a presentation entitled"The Value of Libraries Today". • This year's Glendale Glitters and Glows, beginning the weekend of November 25th and 26th, will be teaming up with Bookmans. There will be a book drive each weekend in December. • Ms. Komernicky addressed Ms. Burr's suggestion from the September 16' 2010 meeting regarding obtaining volunteers from various local public schools. Deer Valley High School does not require volunteer hours for graduation, however some individual classes do require 10 to 20 hours of community service work. Peoria High School uses 60 volunteer hours as an equivalent to 1 credit hour. Glendale High School does not have a requirement, but clubs such as the National Honor Society and the Spanish Club do require hours of service. Independence High School has yet to respond. The libraries continue to accept students as volunteers & interns. Ms. Myers asked if private schools had been contacted, to which Ms. Komernicky stated not at this time. Ms. Burr suggested sending letters out to the schools expressing the need for volunteers and referring to what some of the other schools require. Ms. Myers suggested hanging posters near the GED and ACT book sections to inform patrons of volunteer opportunities. • Ms. Komernicky stated that the renewal for the Culture Pass Program was with the Attorney's office for review at this time. LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS ADJOURNMENT Ms. Donley requested a motion to adjourn the meeting. Ms. Burr moved that the meeting be adjourned.
