HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 9/15/2010 CITY OF GLENDALE,ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15,2010 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM,2"FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET 4:00pm. The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission members M.B. Finnerty, Scott Mink, Janine Barbour,Diane Lesser, and Paul Dagostino,were in attendance. Representing city staff were Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator and Judy Fleming, Public Arts Coordinator. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Mink to APPROVE the minutes of the August 18, 2010 meeting, with corrections on motions on pages 1 and 3 where his name appears as Commissioner Scott instead of Mink. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Barbour and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. No public comments. NEW PART-TIME STAFF MEMBER Sue Komernicky introduced Ms. Judy Fleming, as the new part-time 19 hr. employee in Public Art. 2011 PLEIN AIR PAINTING EVENT Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, presented details of the February 2011 event, stating that there will be six new competition categories. The categories include, Best of Show, Landscape/Cityscape, Portraiture, Animal/Fauna, Abstract and Architecture. The Arts Commission, in collaboration with the Marketing Department, will once again sponsor the 2011 Glendale Plein Air Painting Event, at the Glendale Chocolate Affaire. The painting event is scheduled for February 5th, 2011. The prize money for the different categories will total $3,500. She also provided information on the upcoming Sedona Plein Air Festival being held October 2010. Commissioner Mink noted that last year's event was a success and was delighted with the great positive feedback received. Ms. Vahabzadeh indicated that as they get closer to the date, she will provide them with additional information, including the flyer for the event. PUBLIC SAFETY MEMORIAL Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, provided an update to the Commission members on the Public Safety Memorial Project at the Civic Center Annex. Site work is scheduled to begin 1 September 20, 2010. The art is due to arrive at the site in the latter part of the week. A dedication is scheduled to take place on October 5, 2010 at 6 p.m. She explained this project has been in the planning for three years and was pleased it was now coming to fruition. Mr. Rex Gulbranson, former Public Art Administrator, is helping oversee this important event as a temporary employee. Commissioner Mink asked if artist Hai Ying would be present at the memorial event and would the Commissioners be able to meet him. Ms. Komemicky replied yes. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE Public Art Project Updates Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, provided details on the new public artwork for library cards. She explained the new art project for the cards consist of having images of artwork from each Glendale library's art collection. She presented photos of artwork chosen for the library cards. The Commissioners all agreed it was a great idea. Adult Center Exhibit Updates Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, stated that the Adult Center was still displaying Kyle Jordre's artwork until mid October. Art League West will be exhibiting from early November to the end of January. Mojgan stated that due to recent staff transitioning, Art Awakenings will not be exhibiting this year. Other Staff Updates Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library Graphics Coordinator, invited everyone to attend Ballet Under the Stars at Sahuaro Ranch Park Historical Area on September 26, 2010, at 7 p.m. She stated this event has grown tremendously as a great outdoor family event. Last year's event drew more than 3,000 people. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS Chairperson Criswell welcomed new Commission members, Janine Barbour, Diane Lesser, and Paul Dagostino, as well as staff member Ms. Judy Fleming,to the Arts Commission. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, October 20, 2010, at 4 p.m. at the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Lesser and carried unanimously.
