HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - Minutes - Arts Commission - Meeting Date: 4/28/2010 CITY OF GLENDALE,ARIZONA MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING OF THE ARTS COMMISSION HELD WEDNESDAY,APRIL 28, 2010 LIBRARY BOARD CONFERENCE ROOM SECOND FLOOR 5959 WEST BROWN STREET 4:00pm. The meeting was called to order at 4:02 p.m. by Chairperson Darrell Criswell. Commission members, Enid Spear, Winifred Kultala, and Scott Mink were in attendance. Representing city staff were Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, J. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator and Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library/Arts. Commissioner Manuel Burruel and M. B. Finnerty arrived at 4:07pm. APPROVAL OF THE MEETING MINUTES A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE the minutes of the March 17,2010 meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Kultala and carried unanimously. PUBLIC COMMENTS At this time the Commission will hear comments from the public; however, the Commission may not discuss or consider items not appearing on the agenda unless an actual emergency exists. No public comments. 2010-2011 PERFORMING ARTS PROGRAM Staff presented an overview of the Performing Arts Program for fiscal year 2010/11. The programs are for projects taking place between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011 at venues within Glendale city limits. The Arts Commission reviewed the 11 performing art grant applications keeping in mind the current economic situation. Commissioner Spear explained that given the current economic climate, most art programs understand the city's position in needing to scale down grant funding. Commissioner Finnerty suggested since most of the applicants were well known to the Commission, they should begin the grant determining process by placing each application on an even grant standing and work from there. Everyone agreed. Commissioner Spear declared a conflict in interest for her concerning the application submitted by Childs Play. The following are the Commission's funding recommendations: • Glendale Community College $2,500 • Scottsdale Culture Council $2,000 • Bead Museum $3,000 • West Valley Arts Council $3,000 • Childs Play $3,000 1 • Free Arts Arizona $3,500 • Center Dance Ensemble $3,500 • Arizona Broadway Theatre $3,500 • Phoenix Symphony $3,100 • Arizona Theatre Company $3,000 • Ballet Arizona $3,500 Total $33,600 A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Spear to APPROVE recommended funding for 11 organizations for 11 performing arts grant projects for 2010-11 totaling $33,600. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Mink and carried unanimously. STAFF REPORTS/CORRESPONDENCE Public Art Project Updates Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, stated that the Jazz and Blues Festival had been a great success. Ms. Mojgan Vahabzadeh, Library/Arts noted that the festival was well attended and well received. Commissioner Mink remarked that the only complaint he heard was that there were not enough port-a-potties available for the amount of people attending. Ms Vahabzadeh Library/Arts commented that all the pieces were very well received and she heard many favorable comments. Mary Lucking piece was very popular among all age groups and festival goers also enjoyed making tiles for Kristine Kollasch's Centennial Ball which will be completed by the end May. Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, commented that Stephen Fairfield inquired as to whether the Commission would like to purchase the temporary art piece that he completed at the Festival, Thelonius Monk. The piece is very large and weighs approximately 150 lbs. Commissioners could not think of a place to display the piece, and storage would be an issue. Adult Center Exhibit Updates Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, reported that in the coming months, the center will host the Phoenix Arts Gill and Art Awakenings. He encouraged everyone to attend the showings. Art Maintenance Updates Mr. Gibran Villalobos, Gallery/Collections Coordinator, noted that all maintenance procedures were being done on schedule. Other Staff Updates Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, announced that Ms. Janine Barbour representing the Yucca District has been appointed to the Arts Commission. She will attend the next regular Arts Commission Meeting held on May 19, 2010. 2 Ms. Sue Komernicky, Library and Arts Director, reported on the Historic Centennial Bus Tour being held on May 27, 2010. She invited everyone to attend. She commented on Mr. Villalobos acceptance to the Design School in Chicago. The Commission members all wished him luck, although, he will be greatly missed. NEXT MEETING The next meeting of the Glendale Arts Commission will be held Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at 4 p.m. at the 2nd Floor Board Conference Room, Glendale Public Library, 5959 West Brown Street, Glendale, Arizona. ADJOURNMENT A MOTION was MADE by Commission member Finnerty to ADJOURN the meeting. The MOTION was SECONDED by Commission member Burruel and carried unanimously.
